The first time I did mine the locks where very stiff and the key was flexing and then it worked and have had no issues for over a year

For a quick check, when keying the cylinder, the pins/tumblers are lettered ABCD with there is one dark one numbered 3. There are five slots in the cylinder. One by one, pin/slot, you have to find what your key fits into. For example, it could be AADC that allow your key to slide in and they all drop flush to the cylinder. Am I correct in thinking that the pins go into the slots in this order AA3DC, with the dark pin numbered 3 in the third slot? Or does that dark pin for into the last slot, e.g. AADC3? There are no great videos or guides on this particular plastic cylinder. My new cylinders will be here next week.

I put the black generic pin in the last slot furthest from the front and just for anyone the pins don’t match the gas cap if you did the locking gas cap. Be more than willing to help someone if they need a video call for help

Agree, this is not the gas cap cylinder in the Qtec video I posted earlier. The gas cap cylinder is metal and this one is plastic. The retainer ring at the end of the gas cap cylinder is not present on this plastic cylinder. The pins/springs part is similar, except that the springs are all on one side, not alternating, right/left. So, the black generic pin goes in the 5th slot (last slot), furthest from the front where the key goes in? I’ll try that. Got anything useful to offer in terms of orientation of the cylinder when inserting it into the latch handle and turning it to seat itself? The pins should be facing to the right side with the keyhole horizontal when looking at the latch handle, correct?

Key in cyclinder and insert it will only go in one way And the pins should all be flush to the cylinder with the key in certain if they are off it is not correct

The pins seem right and my key goes in. When I insert the cylinder into the latch handle and turn it, it seats and will not unlock.
so to make sure Im understanding: you have the gates in the cylinder, but when the cylinder is in the box the key just spins the cylinder?

if that’s accurate, then it sounds like the gates were not ordered properly and/or the cylinder didnt catch in the housing. Probably both…but It seated at the back of the housing and wont come out.

the way I did these locks is make sure the key will action back and forth in the cylinder and see the lock function; then insert the key and cylinder into the housing, and turn (iirc) clockwise to seat the cylinder and then it will lock and unlock.

the dealer will give you the tumbler combination for your key; but if memory serves the underseat cylinders are a position short of the door and are the same as the console…so be aware of that.

Nope. The cylinder will not spin/turn at all. Im going to try something different next week when the new cylinders arrive. I’ll let you know. I’ll take pics and if it all works out I’ll post pics and procedures. Thanks for the other info you posted above, that’s good gouge.

i hope it helps. Could also keep watching some pannier vids for more explanations since the procedure is the same.

best of luck sir!

Ok, got it done.

EDIT: I removed the old cylinders as described earlier in this thread—drilling them out. There’s probably an easier way. See step 3 in the PDF.

Benny sent me a PDF for replacing the glove box cylinder—same cylinder, same latch handle too. Thanks so much Benny @AllMoparParts.com for the assist—I ordered the lock cylinders (part 68384451AB - you’ll need 2 of these for this lock box and it comes with everything you need to make it work) from allmoparparts. Now, the steps. Watch the Qtec video I posted on this thread for how to insert the gates and springs if you want, except the gates do not alternate top/bottom of the cylinder like those on the gas cap lock. All gates go in this one on the same side (top). Insert all five springs into the round portion of each slot, with the spring insert side facing up. The dark black metal gate goes in the 1st slot where the key enters the cylinder (Figure 1). This is the only gate that does not sit flush when the key is inserted or removed from the cylinder—it is the retainer gate that holds the cylinder in the latch handle. Each gate after that must go in one at a time, inserting your key each time you add another one until the correct one is installed—the correct gate you ask? You get 3 each of AR,BR,CR,DR silver gates. The correct gate is one that when your key is inserted it sits flush to the top and bottom of the outside of the cylinder barrel (Figure 2). Use your finger to make sure your springs and gates you have installed do not fall out while you work. Once the black gate and the combination of the other four silver gates allow your key to slide in/out and all the silver gates rest flush along the top and the bottom of the cylinder barrel while that key is inserted then you are ready to insert the black plastic rectangular retaining chock into the side of the cylinder barrel to hold all the gates in (Figure 3). Make sure the chock seats flush too. Then, with your key in the cylinder, insert your cylinder into the lock handle with the black gate at around the 1 o’clock orientation of the hole and while pushing in, turn it clockwise until it seats (Figure 4). You should be done (Figure 5). This should work for glove box and center console locks too.

I couldn't take the suspense any longer! To bring everybody up to date, I failed on my first attempt at installing a lock cylinder in the lock box I purchased one year ago. AM1978 failed on his first attempt and sounded just like the problem I had. I inserted the cylinder and locked it into place, but I couldn't rotate the cylinder in the opposite direction to unlock the box. I drilled the lock out and ordered new cylinders. When the cylinders arrived, I had decided I wasn't going to try again, but would sell the box. I liked the opportunity to have a lock box, but I wouldn't be able to store as much stuff in it as I was currently doing. Ever since then, the box and new cylinders have been sitting in my garage. When I read that am1978 had put the black metal gate in the 1st slot closest to key opening, I remembered putting it in the last slot, fartherist from the key opening. I had to know, so I put the black gate in the 1st slot followed by the silver gates, inserted the cylinder in the opening, turned clockwise and locked it into place. I pulled the handle and it was locked into place effectively locking the lid. I then turned the key counter clockwise and it rotated this time, unlike my first attempt to install a lock cylinder. I pulled the handle and the lid opened! Thanks to am1978, it worked. Now I have to decide if I want to install the box, or sell it. More damn decisions! Come to think of it, decisions that is, it is am1978's fault! I had already decide to try to sell the box, but along comes 1978 and shows me my mistake! Crap! Decisions, decisions! I hate friggin decisions!

LOL! I bought two cylinders and screwed them up. Drilled them out. Order four more—just in case. Scored on the first two because Benny gave me that PDF showing the black gate position. Now I have two spare cylinders…..oh well. It all works and if I run across anyone who needs them to do this again I am happy to part with them or if I sell the box later I will provide the cylinders with the box. Glad you got it working. It was pretty simple when the cylinders are assembled correctly.

I just installed the box to see if I like it or not. This gives me two lock boxes. One under the back seat and one in the console.

And glove box.
Forgot about the glove box, since I didn't have to install a lock cylinder. By the way, what do you brew at home?

Any style. I like wheats, Berliner Weisse and fruited sours, and NE or juicy or hazy IPAs under 6.5% abv, so that my rotation. Funny how we conquer an issue on this forum and it turns into a different topic—beer, whiskey, etc. LOL. Cheers!
