You're going to see a lot of post as I have never had a topper or rack system before. I intend to put a bed slider system in as well as either a topper or rack system. I like the modular advantage of a rack system but like the protection from the elements a topper gives our four legged pals. So I guess my question is do they make inserts for the rack systems that will keep bed contents dry? I have seen the side panels but nothing for the top unless you install a tent which I do not plan on doing... Obviously a topper would be ideal but would like to keep the weight down...

I only question the difference in weight between a rack system with top, sides, front, and back to keep everything dry and a topper

We are going through the same process. I think we decided on an RSi Smart cap to have the weight capacity and shelter for our pupper.

I really like them, but in the past I have removed and sold toppers. Just really limits loading the bed when needed....I would like to see a hinged or modular system that allows unlimited access to the bed when needed without having to remove things....

If you want the pets to be safe, you will have to stop worrying about weight and get an enclosed system for the bed. I have a RSI SmartCap. The side windows open upward and give full access to the bed. Mine is mounted using the Trail Rail components, and is easily removable, if desired. I used a Harbor Freight engine lift to create a hoist so that I can install and remove it by myself. The roof rack on the cap works great as an attachment point for the hoist.
