I'm really glad to hear the highway ride is good, that's where I spend the absolute vast majority of my time.
I'm really *really* hoping they aren't unbearable with the 3.73 + 6 speed trans....
I have that on my manual '21 Willys as well. I assumed it was just a manual transmission thing because I never recalled seeing that on other Gladiators
I'm going to stick with the 3.73 gears. I spoke at length with another 6spd / 3.73 gear Gladiator guy on Reddit that has been running 35s for about 10k miles.
Per that guy, it's a completely livable setup, he runs out the RPM a little bit more in 1st/2nd gear than he did with 33s. 6th gear is...
Got mine as well today, they felt pretty light so I had to go and weigh them quick.
57lbs! Seems pretty dang good for a 35, even considering it's only 10.5" wide.
I like reading these kinds of conversations, you learn a lot, and you get to see how wildly different people experience similar things (snowy conditions).
Coming from my younger days of driving RWD '80s BMWs, and a RWD Ford Ranger (4cyl, manual trans) with all seasons here in our Wisconsin...
Definitely apples to oranges, truck vs SUV, let alone a Range Rover (regardless of year, they're all extremely capable despite their reliability issues.
My Land Rover LR4 was the best handling snow vehicle I've ever driven. All they need are capable tires and I trusted that thing to get me...
When I first saw the drop we went from 60's to 50's which is roughly when they swap to winter blend gas at most gas stations I believe.
Now I'm doing most of my driving in the 35-45* range.
I'm also driving over 85 miles a day at 72-74 mph, which might by atypical of most Gladiator drivers so...
I lost almost exactly 2 mpg overnight.
I drive the same route, 45 miles, each way to work. Same speed (cruise set at 72 mph) on the highway, and over the course of my entire gas tank worth of driving I dropped from the low/mid 18s down to the low/mid 16s.
I managed to squeak out 19 mpg last...
I sent many a message back and forth with a guy on Reddit running 35s with the 3.73 (specifically the manual transmission like me). Basically, the width doesn't affect it as much as the overall height, which is what effectively changes your gearing.
There's a chance, depending on speeds, that...
It's perfect because I've been on the fence about getting skinny 35s for a while. Not sure how I'll like the gearing with the manual/3.73s, so I may want to go back to my 33s.
Worse case scenario we come out ahead financially, best case I like them and made a crazy cheap transition into 35s.
They're definitely not a tire I would look at when full price, but for me this will be a really good way to see whether or not I actually want to go the 35" tire route. I've heard some pretty bad things about 35s with the 6 speed + 3.73 gears
I ordered a set...
I look at this way, I have two options if I change my mind:
1) I can return them immediately at the store when I look at them and check dates, etc
2) I can probably sell the set of 5 on FB Marketplace for like $900 once the Walmart sale ends
Sounds like some people have...
All this talk has me looking at Alfas again.. Maybe if I could find an old Spider to tinker on over winter, I could tell the wife it'll be our "fun" or "date night" car if we ever find time to have fun or go on dates again lol
I'm 6'1 and I don't feel cramped at all, but it's obviously much smaller than any other full size truck or SUV on the market. I believe the smaller, upright windshield also makes it feel a bit more cramped as well.
I got used to it by the time I reached my house after buying.
Another +1 for the Alfa, I adored mine. Had to sell mine to make room for car seat(s), and I miss that thing all the time.
As long as you're OK with the occasional quirks, they're super fun and economical DDs.
Badlands has a lot of fun options for light off roading. A friend and I went there and spent about 5.5-6hrs playing around there. He was in a stock 4Runner with hwy tires and still had a blast doing the hill climbs and sand dunes.
It was a 4.5 hr drive for me, and was well worth it.
You know, I never really cared for rock crawling, but now that they're on..... Might have to give it a go lol
I was just praying a bolt didn't snap. Did you have to cut into the floor at all? I read about 200 horror stories yesterday while I was panicking :D
