  1. I Love Winter... Post Your Snow Pics ❄️ ?

That's nuts, and I live in Montana. I was in Tahoe in the late 90s when Truckee, et al and Reno flooded after a 10' dump then a pineapple express the following week. That was crazy and not even close to this. Hopefully the upper Sierras don't get a rapid warming spell or rain now. That's what...
  2. Do mud flaps make a difference (protect my driver's door handle from road grit/mud)?

I also have the Rokblokz regulars front and rear on a stock Rubi. Used to get mud filled handles, now I don't. Also have done well in our winter/mag chloride/sand slurry we get around here. The Rokblokz were spendy, but were the only ones I found that were flexible enough to take a hit, and I've...
  3. What has the off road community become?

My only complaint is they can find MT/ATs in those crazy sizes yet I can hardly find a 35x11.5 ?
  4. A Jeep Tech, Mechanic, & JT owner answers reliability questions

Yeah, and to your other point about modern starters probably being more resilient too. These were a '96 Explorer, '00 Mustang, and an '03 F150. The F150 I suspect was corrosion related to be fair, it was low mileage when I bought it but it came from Chicago and had a surprising amount of...
  5. camper/topper/shell third brake light

On our OVRLND+JT We landed up stripping and wiring into our factory wiring that's under the driver side behind the rear wheel well along the frame. I felt the same, I had the top brake light and wanted to set it up, in the winter around Montana it's easy to get your rear lights covered up in...
  6. A Jeep Tech, Mechanic, & JT owner answers reliability questions

Same for my vehicles, I've been fortunate and have only had really reliable vehicles. The only item to fail and get me stuck somewhere has been starters, at least on vehicles over 100K, 3 of them. Of course, those were all Fords, so maybe that's a "Ford thing" ?
  7. A Jeep Tech, Mechanic, & JT owner answers reliability questions

I wish that speed question had a followup. With axle shaft, u-joint upgrades and trussing maybe? People compete on those setups, but usually with way lighter rigs. At some point after all the work on a 44 you may as well have spent the $ on a 60 or similar. Not sure if you are doing your own...
  8. A Jeep Tech, Mechanic, & JT owner answers reliability questions

I actually haven't come across the OPDA issue. I had a transmission pump failure at around 120K and 17 years, and some sensor failures around the same time (cam, map) that I believe are specific to the Rubicon 4.0s of the time.
  9. A Jeep Tech, Mechanic, & JT owner answers reliability questions

Some interesting answers, but nice high-level info. I agree about what he said with the 4.0, both the strengths and weaknesses. It's been pretty simple for me to work on, the '05-06 Rubicons had more electronics in the form of sensors, but not too many. I already preemptively replaced the...
  10. A Jeep Tech, Mechanic, & JT owner answers reliability questions

As both a 3.6 and 4.0 owner, some bad news/good news for me according to at least one Jeep tech's experience:
  11. Happier Then or Happier Now?

Everytime I take it on a trip or just drive it I get happier with it.
  12. Who uses heated seats for back therapy?

How do you like the heated Wet Okole's? I was thinking of the same for our LJ after going through some cheapo heated seats. Are they hard wired or do they plug-in for power? I had non-heated Wet Okole's on my Taco and definitely worth the extra $.
  13. How long did your windshield last before cracking?

I've been lucky, about 11 months with one little chip in the JT, 3-4 of those months on sanded winter roads. A lot of luck though, we went through windshields and headlights like crazy with our 05 Wrangler and now are on like 8 years without a crack. Headlights it was great replacing the stock...
  14. How long did your windshield last before cracking?

I've definitely found this with General Grabbers vs Coopers, I really liked both, but the Grabbers throw a lot of pebbles and the Coopers almost none.
  15. Coverless - trail rail storage options?

You could use slide nuts and bolt through any size tool/storage box into the trail rail. Many of the rack slide nuts work in the trail rail system, I have some from Rhino Rack as well as some that were meant for my Tacoma's rail system to hold a Hi-lift. By bolting through from inside a lockable...
  16. Massive Deep Freeze for Christmas?

Yeah, and I even missed the coldest, Malta hit -77 (windchill) which is a record for at least Montana. Congrats Malta, you're even colder than Browning.
  17. Massive Deep Freeze for Christmas?

Oh man, at least it's going to be sunny today: Could be worse, Bozeman is still in the mountains so we don't get as cold as the arctic Eastern and Northeastern parts of the state:
  18. Massive Deep Freeze for Christmas?

We're sunny and 4F right now, got down to -14 w/o windchill last night. I'm training for a winter bike/ski race in a few weeks, so this week's training is going to be fun:
  19. Getting Flashed Due to Bright Headlights?

Yeah, that's crazy. Lightbars are common in MT, but I've never seen anyone lightbar at someone. I think there would be some bad outcomes if someone did that here, even as laid back as we are.
  20. Getting Flashed Due to Bright Headlights?

I have the factory LEDs on a Rubicon. I've rarely been flashed in the past year, but after any suspension/weight changes I always check my beam aim. I don't know about the accuracy of "any" change to headlights being illegal, anytime I've upgraded to LEDs, like on my Wrangler I've made sure to...
