The bracket thats removed is only held in place by foam. When I installed the box I shot some foam between the skin and the box.

I have replaced by bedcaps twice, once because I myself removed my smartcap. Caps are not that expensive, they are about 35-45 a piece. Just grab one end and rip it up and off. I never could remove them without breaking the clips.
I did the same mod this past weekend. So far I like it, didn't feel the need to install the lights. Kit was on sale at extreme terrain, only took a week and half to get.
If thats an RSI Smart cap, they used the wrong gasket when then installed your topper. The gasket at least on mine gaps it about maybe 3/8 to a 1/2 inch, which allows the back to open. Forgot to mention that RSI also supplies this square hocky pucks as spacers between the bed rails and the cap...
