That's exactly the point, it all depends on what you want out of the vehicle. I've worked on moon buggies, 4cy crawlers, big block rock bouncers, all the way to KOH and Baja trucks, and there is no 1 answer fits everything. I had a 80HP Samurai-based rock crawler on 40's that could idle up a...
Economies of Scale would say if Jeep purchased a million identical assemblies vs 250,000 of each A, B, C, and D, the million assemblies would be cheaper. Customization costs money. From the company that would make a switch to save an additional .10 per Jeep sold, if the different gear ratios...
Or people recognize performance and the importance of matching gear ratio to horsepower. Jeep could save money by putting the same ratio in every single vehicle they product, but they don't and there's a reason for that.
I'm not going down the road again, but your last statement is ridiculous...
Riding around on 37's and stock 4.10's will feel like you're pulling around a 2K trailer all the time.
It's also the equivalent of starting in 2nd or 3rd gear if you know how to drive a manual transmission.
Yes the Jeep will move just fine, and lots of people drive for years on larger tires...
East coast gear supply is one of the best in the industry, you're paying a premium for their experience and name. I wouldn't say it's not worth it, but if it takes 12 hrs to install Dana Spicer gears they are charging more hours than it will take. I did mine in less time on a set of quick jacks...
From a practical standpoint, completely agree. There's 100 things you can do to make towing more comfortable, but at the end of the day liability and legal issues are what they are, and you have to remember the GCWR. Get in a wreck while towing and I promise the insurance lawyers will look for...
Not 40's, but I pull my boat regularly on 37's and 5.13's.
not something I'd want to do every day, but the Jeep does fine. Boat is between 5500 and 6000 loaded up. You know you're on a hill and the mileage sucks, but its only 1-2X a month in the summer and only about an hour to the lake
IF you are installing them go spicer, they set up the easiest.
If a shop is installing them, install whatever the shop carries/recommends. It's on them to warranty work and parts. It's not worth the $50 in savings you might get buying gears and then giving them to a shot to reluctantly install...
You can think that all you want, and I would agree a majority of Jeep owners won't regear, but the ones that do understand and go deeper a vast majority of the time.
the 95% in here either have regears or will regear, the 100's of gear swaps I did when I was in the industry all regeared.
and...
Go with 5.13's- if you're like 96% of jeep owners, you'll be very happy with those.
85MPH with 37's and 5.13's puts you at 2650 RPM, right on the bottom end of the peak power curve for the 3.6 Pentstar. Understand that there isn't a gearing available that will get you decent mileage at 85 in a...
OKay, if you want to do 85 on the interstate I can see where you wouldn't want to gear as deep. however 95% of lifted Jeep Owners have absolutely no desire to do 85MPH all day in their Jeep. I pull a 5K boat with mine, and spend lots of time in the N GA mountains. There is an absolute advantage...
You're ignoring additional rotating mass and the additional weight of the accessories typically put on a lifted Jeep. Plus the Engineers have other factors they have to consider that I don't care about like EPA/mileage ratings.
intended design by the engineers is to appeal to the largest...
Oversized tires on a vehicle without regearing is like driving a manual transmission and starting in 2nd or 3rd gear every time instead of 1st. There's a reason old manual trucks that actually tow and are treated like trucks came with a granny gear. Gearing isn't for highway speeds at 80+, then...
C'mon mate, you're better than that, stick the knife in and turn.
You might as well have said "I know you are but what am I?"..... at least put some effort into it so we can all have a good laugh.
Find a new mechanic. The whole point of regearing is to get the RPMs back where they are supposed to be.
Your RPMs dropped when you went to 37's, you need to get them back up (or a bit higher) to get the Jeep driving correctly again.
I put 5.13's in mine, been towing and running interstate...
