The "no ground plane" antennas mean they don't need a ground plane to tune up and give a good VSWR. But mounting them right on flat sheet metal will improve the range and raising them up in the air will reduce range.
Its good you spent hours and hours researching before installing, many people...
The aftermarket ground plane disc is 6" diameter and not big enough. A UHF antenna would need 1/4 wavelength radius around the mount meaning a 12" disc would be required. Or just use a trunk lip mount.
Nice looking install and I hear the Wouxon radios work well, you should get really good range out of that setup. However you could improve antenna efficiency by using a trunk lip mount on the hood near a hinge. Antennas like to be mounted right to a big piece of flat metal and raising the feed...
I used a Laird TM8B mount which is black and very good quality, they can sometimes show up on eBay new in the $20 range. Someone complained in the past about another brand that may not have worked out.
Top of hood using a trunk lip mount is the best place Iāve found. The side of hood mounts donāt provide a good ground plane and put the antenna base about 6ā below hood level like my response to a post below. GMRS is UHF and mostly line of sight, what can the antenna below see?
Here is a trailer plug similar to what I bought then I used about 2ft of 10ga red/black pair to a 45A Anderson Power Pole. Its a handy power adapter for solar panels and ham radio/geek equipment...
A dummy load and run the radio at 13.8v right at the radio, then it should meet specs. For higher current stuff like 30A or more I usually run the negative right to the battery, otherwise for smaller radios I'll find the nearest legit threaded grounding point in the cab.
In my truck I pulled...
The trailer socket at the rear has 12v at fairly high current and I wired a trailer plug with the typical Anderson Power Poles used with radio equipment. Iāve powered many ham radios and also charged the battery via solar panels using the trailer socket.
I would avoid connecting the new battery to the vehicle main battery unless you use a diode isolator so both batteries will charge from the alternator but are otherwise isolated. If you direct connect a battery with a long wiring run they will never charge the same and when parked your main...
That doesnāt sound right because when the engine is running and ESS is not in effect, both batteries are in parallel and charging and sharing the load for lights, wipers, head unit, HVAC, seat and steering wheel heaters, etc.
You mean you had your dad get you a CB license, in 1974 you had to certify that you were at least 18yrs old to apply for a CB license. I had to wait until 1975 when I was 18.
I had AAA replace mine not long ago, just had to pay our $250 deductible and the guy drove around for an hour until the cal was done. I had the dealer replace a defective leaking rear window last month and their glass company claims no calibration is needed for front windshield and they are...
I talked to a glass dealer who has done many of these and they donāt usually calibrate. They say to not disconnect power from the the radar/camera box during windshield replacement and it will retain the cal and work fine.
Not standard and not necessary. How many factory electronics have a fuse in the negative lead? And factory electronics are grounded all over the chassis and some direct to the battery. About the only scenario Iāve heard of a potential problem is where you ground a CB direct to the battery and if...
I think the stock inverter lives under the dash on the drivers side and itās very small, maybe somebody can confirm that. It might make a nice project to find a pure sinewave replacement with a control line that will power it on and off with the ignition just like the stock one and maybe up the...
The HP manual claimed reasonable RMS accuracy but apparently itās not the right meter. This one is specifically for measuring AC power circuits and is true RMS. I see itās not a square wave but a modified step square wave.
Iāve had this adapter for many years and donāt remember where I got it. I just did a search for anything similar and nothing comes up. I thought they were a little more common.
It could make a good gift for an unruly child.
