  1. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

I can't grasp the meaning of the Venn diagram, possibly because I'm too serious. I feel like I'm missing out on a good joke. I love a good joke. I use "Youse" in an attempt to be different. It's not as permanent as a tattoo. My other thing is photochops.
  2. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

It's OUR thread. I'm well satisfied with the outcome. I can ignore the peanut gallery. It was fun to collaborate with youse guys.
  3. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

From the Wrangler forum / J Harp - I appreciate you bringing this very well documented and instrumented test data over to this forum. I was reading the thread over on the gladiator forum and found it very interesting. In my line of work (building control systems to run large data center...
  4. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

I call it a source that is not affected by the surge of current needed to get the starter moving. Otherwise, the answer is yes.
  5. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

what conclusion are you looking for?
  6. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

We are on the Gladiator forum. I wasn't being clear. You are the winner. :)
  7. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

I’m guess you are thinking just Gladiators and I am think all Jeeps. I’m ok if you call the win on this one.
  8. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

You are too smart to be posting lines like this. Some Jeeps have 2 batteries, but the batteries, starting, and charging systems are different than my Jeep.
  9. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

Preach it Bro! FWIW, I think the stupidest thing about the design of the Jeep battery system is that owners feel (or have to) charge the batteries between drives. My shopping car, a Honda, sometimes sits for 2 months without being driven. It always cranks.
  10. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

For me, acceptance was not the issue. The issue was so much wrong information floating around on the forums and how to pick what is correct. Evidence of that is on display in our original thread. Even after we have settled this part of how things operate, I've found it necessary to refine the...
  11. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

You are having too much fun. :) The total time shown here is 1/2 of a second. The starter is still cranking.
  12. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

After a few minutes under the hood of a running Jeep, the battery is no longer cold. Yet the charging continues. Is it because the Intelligent battery sensor is NOT smart?
  13. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

The football game is over. Clemson lost (again). Woe is me. I'll bicker some more because I am upset about the game. I view the IBS as a book. There is info there, but no action. The action comes after something reads the book. I'd call it the "Mysterious Black Thingy That Helps My...
  14. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

OK, this is my last reply on the IBS. This is fun for me, but I want to watch the football game. I'm looking for something that would justify the "Intelligent" label. Everything you list, even if I conceded they were useful measurements, are just that - MRASUREMENTS. No decisions are being...
  15. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

Ah, but it is hooked to both batteries. This is my last reply on this issue.
  16. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

Respectively, those readings, except for State of Charge", are items that pertain to the IBS, not the systems in the vehicle. Even the Resistance and SOC are not very useful because it is measuring both batteries together. More important, the numbers are not available to the owner.
  17. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

Don't bicker with me! :) The fact that the Jeep system with its IBS and dash voltmeter tell the driver almost nothing when one of the batteries starts causing problems makes me feel differently. :) The reluctance to reset the IBS because "charging is working good now" is another nail in the...
  18. How the ESS / battery system works - 3.6 engine

We had a long running thread with a lot of contributors trying to settle how the 2 Jeep batteries worked together and what actually happens when the "Start" process is initiated. Below is a synopsis of the discussion. I am also including the link to the thread in the case you are bored and...
  19. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

Youse guys are saying the Intelligent Battery Sensor is not really intelligent. I agree.
  20. Are the batteries really isolated during ESS stops?

Late model Jeeps with batteries have 2 starting regimes. Let's call the first one "Cold Start." This does not mean that the engine (or weather) is cold. :) For our purpose, a cold start is one where the vehicle ignition was in the "off" position when you start. When pressing the start...
