What's too slow? 5mph is the recommended speed for deep water, per Jeep. Faster than that, and the thoughts by others here is that water gets pushed into places not designed to withstand the water pressure.
Oh btw I recall a guy took a JK through Africa, like all around, and intentionally chose the back roads without pavement. Think it took him all summer, though he avoided the rainy season and it was mostly dry
So what's this I am reading about water getting into the following:
hub seal, tube seal, pinion seal, or shaft seal, with ujoints/cardigan stems ball joints/tierod ends
How likely is this to happen? I dont even see these areas rusting as an issue in Jk discussions
That is primarily their purpose, but snorkels do raise the air intake high enough so you don't suck water into the engine along with the air. They help against those unexpected dips and splashes.
It is about 1" above the transfer case
I like this response on another forum. Guy says he is an very harsh areas of Alaska. From his other post on threads about the JT, I got the impression he believes JTs wouldnt last 5 minutes on Alaska trails
Wayout Concept fording
A third member? Interesting. Maybe that' sit. I meant a single piece housing in that the part that contains the axle shafts and differential gears is all one solid forged/cast piece of metal, no diff covers. Well, I suppose welded shut would be needed...nah now that I think of it that wouldn't...
My question was only on the seals. More electronics I get, but bearings, seals, materials, those things only get better as time goes on. Costs are cut in regular vehicles so new cars can be worse than old cars in long-term reliability, but for purpose-built vehicles like Jeeps and Landrovers, I...
So sealing tech has gotten worse over the last 20 years?
Cant see anything special in MotoBiscuits article or discussion on forums specific to LC water abilities
https://www.motorbiscuit.com/heres-what-makes-land-cruisers-so-reliable/
Why cant modern Jeeps do what Land Cruisers were doing decades ago? Besides a snorkel, what mods are needed for a Jeep to go this deep?
Yes, I made a thread last year on water fording depth. This thread is different. It asks for information on what the Land Cruisers have that JTs dont and...
I thought the announcement was for the JT4xE to be a 2023 model? I will trade in my JT if the 4xe gets close to initially advertised 50mi on the battery, as the JL has been nuked to 25mi now.
Ah, pity. I was thinking the pop-up was a separate level from the main unit, more like a camper van that can pop up, the top level you crawl into from inside to sleep in.
Right, and some racks alone are close to 200lbs. Something like the JCR rack is only 87lbs.
Wait a minute, your camper includes a liftaway top, that isnt a separate tent on top?
I love how that rack goes over the roof a little bit. If only there was a way to make that into a rack instead of a camper. Would allow to have a larger tent easier. Never been a fan of campers (in my new and limited experience with looking into overlanding) as the weight is greater than the...
