2 questions:

Which iron decon works the best without staining the black plastic fenders and door handles? I read adam's will stain them.

How do you get mud stains off of those darn fenders?? I scubbed with 3 different products yesterday, VRP, simple green, and invisible whatever by chemical guys. Nothing worked.
I’ve not heard of iron decon staining. I used McGuires Spray Clay. I haven’t had an issue with mud yet. I use Superior Products Dark Fury for the wheels tires and wheel wells with good luck.

I was reading questions and reviews about the Adam’s version on Amazon and it came up a lot which led me to more internet research and it’s about 50/50. Some say it does, some say it doesn’t.

Yeah I would steer clear of it then. Not worth the risk. Sometimes I wonder if these issues come from people not knowing how to use the product in the first place. Misuse of something like iron decon could certainly cause issues especially on plastics.

I wondered the same. Most everyone says it’s ok if you don’t let it dry on the surface. I wonder if those reporting stains thought they washed it off in time. Anyways, sorry to derail this convo!

Looks good but my times more valuable than wasting it on 10hrs of cleaning a Jeep that's gonna be dirty again in 3 or 4 days. I run mine through the jet sprayers at the gas station for $6 and it gets mine clean enough. I mean in all reality your never gonna make back the time and money spent in all those products if you ever sell it or trade in. My buddy garaged his 2011 JKU and had a similar setup as mine. Waxed it every year and it was in a lot better shape paint wise than mine was when he sold his. He had like 118,000 miles on his and sold it in 2019 for $14,000. My 2010 JKU was dinged up on every fender and the AC was not blowing cold and the soft top was leaking. 132,000 miles and they gave me $12,000 for mine. I Owned that thing for 9 yrs and never waxed it one time and i washed it about every 2 or 3 months.

I'm all about cleaning one up and you did a great job, but 10hrs, that's a lot time.

My day job is a Director of a company that provides services to the fastest growing industry in the world. That is to say my day job is stressful.

Detailing cars has become my hobby. Another way of putting it is I do it for fun. To illustrate, I've spent as many as 19hrs doing a disaster detail for someone for free. In my case the saying is "detailing is cheaper than therapy". I don't do it for $ (mostly) or ROI. Someone might spend 10hrs on a Saturday fishing or playing golf or hunting. Me, detailing. I get enjoyment out of seeing the final product and also from continuing to improve my processes.

That makes sense, I'm not knocking no one for trying to have less stress and if that's what does it for you, my hats are off to ya brother!!!

Glad it helped. I learned most of the techniques from watching professional detailers with Youtube channels. As hobbies go, this one mostly pays for itself. I can do one paying job for $250-$300 and put that into equipment and chemicals. I have also done bartering with a detail before.

I'll detail about once a year... In my experience vehicles are much easier to clean afterwards and if you use a good sealant and/or wax product it definitely protects the finish. It's a lot of work and certainly not for everyone, but I do enjoy the process to a degree and certainly like the end result. Oh.. and yes! I had to redo the tires to tone down the tire gloss - Definitely too shiny in these photos... Cheers! ?

Spray it on the car and wipe it down. It assures there isn't any residue or film left on the clear coat before you put your wax or sealant of choice.
Maybe a dumb question but wouldn't the isopropyl negate the need for clay barring the paint? Seems like it would strip any & all contaminants off the paint - well, unless it were absolutely filthy before.

No. IPA will clean any residues from products but a clay bar removes bonded contaminates from the clear coat.
