In the70/80's you could buy a WWII Jeep in the box from the back of Popular Mechanics, it was something like $1200, but everyone was complaining that it wasn't worth doing it because they were covered in Cosmoline, and it was hard to get off, What I remember,

I showed my dad, he was a NO!

but the catalogs were always a favorite, Sears, Pennys, Wards, great toys and smell,

You could build a VW bug or Jeep from a Whitney catalog, they had everything, even things you shouldn't want or bought!

I've got a late 80's / early 90's Sears catalog of nothing but truck / Jeep accessories. Options sure were limited back then. (I casually collect old catalogs, magazines, brochures, etc.)

I remember the Monkey Ward Catalogs...as a kid they were kinda 'meh' but that Sears Christmas Catalog...I was like Ralphie from 'A Christmas Story' when his nose is pressed against the department store window, when that Sears Christmas Catalog came...I was dogearing pages and circling things for my Christmas wish list like crazy :CWL: :CWL: :CWL: :CWL: :CWL:

Also, there are a couple of the Sears kit homes on my road. Still in good condition. There were three but, one burned down like 15 years ago ☹☹☹

I always made sure to give Grandma page numbers and item numbers on my Christmas list. 😁

I remember my parents bought me a wire haired fox terrier puppy from Sears. It arrived by train and we picked it up at the train station in Barnegat NJ in the early 60s. It was shipped in a crate like they used in Jurassic park movie.

I can remember my grandpa telling about buying a 22 and a singleshot shotgun from MonkeyWards.
Not sure if they were mail order or if he went into the store.
If my memory serves, those items would be shipped to you directly. Didn't have to go thru the store for long pew pews.

You use to be able to buy houses from Sears.
Before WW2 and the advent of large scale building and tract homes, most communities near a railroad depot were full of houses from Sears, Aladdin and other regional companies. We nearly bought a 1910 Aladdin several years ago but settled for a stick-built 1909 house ;)

It was pretty wild though-- You could buy the house, the furnace, stove, the furnishings, and the tools to put it together. All the lumber was pre-cut and intended to be assembled by anyone. All you really had to do was dig and set a foundation, everything else was packed in the train carfor your new home. Think of it as Ikea for houses, but built to last.

Sears built much of its wealth as a company by financing the mortgages on these, too.

If my memory serves, those items would be shipped to you directly. Didn't have to go thru the store for long pew pews.
Prior to the NFA in 1934, you could order any pew pew imaginable including FA Class 4 Thompsons, BAR's, etc from Monkey Wards or Sears, to be sent along with your sheep sheers, underoos, and patio furniture. It really was the Amazon of its day. Or maybe Amazon is the Sears of our day?

Back in the day the Three Stooges were getting married but had to assemble a kit house for the new brides. Curley lost the instructions, bathtub hung on the wall, other non standard features…
