Getting my 2023 Overland lifted 2-1/2" soon and plan on putting some old school Vision HD 85 Soft 8 Series Black Wheels 17x9 on her. My question is what backspace should I order? They are available with 4.0", 4.50" and 5.50" backspacing.

5.5 would be 12.7 mm of positive offset and 4.5 would be 12.7 mm of negative offset. Either of those will work. I recommend the 5.5 to minimize tire poke. I'd avoid the 4' cus thats just asking for ball joint troubles at negative 20 plus offset.

CJ retro wheels are 17x8.5 with 5.2" backspacing. I wouldn't want to go too much less due to tire poke and ball joint issues as mentioned before . I originally had 35's and now running 37's but both are 12.5" wide, so the tire poke is basically the same

With the 5,5" back spacing. It will work. But if you decide later on going with 2.5 ton steering linkage, or large body shocks. You will have troubles with rubbing on the shocks and the rims won't clear the bigger tie rod ends. So keep this in mind.

So what is the solution to that? Go with the 4.5" backspacing?

You might check to see what the lift manufacturer recommends. For example, MetalCloak recommends '4.5" of backspacing or less..." if you do the outboard front lower shock mount in your lift.
