I'm planning to upsize stock rubi wheels to either true 35's or 315/70/17. I see some in the member sales section selling 4 tires/wheels, and some 5. The spare is a steel wheel, 17" but is it the same 7.5" width?

If you replace the spare wheel with a new wider one to properly carry a larger tire, are there specific attributes it needs to work with the under-bed lift/carrier system? Removable center, a certain diameter opening? I'd be fine with a cheaper steelie as a spare in a 8.5" width but don't want to buy the wrong thing. Or trash an expensive rim hanging under my truck bed for years. What are the options/pros/cons?

If you opt for a matching wheel and tire for your spare you should incorporate a 5 wheel rotation, so your spare won't end up hanging underneath for years...

When I first put the 35's on my JT i had 5 aftermarket JK rims that were 17x9. The 5th wheel spare didnt sit noticably lower and didnt change the drive of the vehicle. It also didnt require any modification of the wheel storage system, provided your 5th wheel rim has the center open to allow the spring through.

On the JK I did 5 tire rotations until a sidewall eneded up getting eaten and replaced then the new tire went on the back until I needed another set. Then I would buy 3 new keep the best of the old for the spare.

On the JT I'm gonna run 4 and buy a used spare.

Is the spare a steel wheel or a regular factory rim?

Yes on the steel, and it looks like it is 7.5". This ebay sale shows one:

My current plan is to just upgrade the 4 wheels/tires on a Rubicon to 315/70r17 on 8.5" wide rims. Keep the spare steel rim and Falken 285 on there under the bed. It's "close enough" in size that it will suffice as a spare and I will just do 4-tire rotation.
