4th fuel pump in 6 weeks on a JK. Bad parts from MOPAR?

My wife's 2014 JK started leaking gas fumes in the garage. I figured it was the fuel pump assembly (common issue) cracking near the top. Took it to the dealer cause it's winter and I didn't want to drop that tank. They agreed on the issue, couldn't get a mopar part but could get aftermarket locally. They installed it and when I filled up the tank the gauge only went to 1/2. Week later they had the MOPAR part and swapped the fuel pump a second time. That time the gauge went up to 3/4 but still no higher. They found another MOPAR part number and were sure that would work. Nope, fuel gauge still only goes up to 3/4 after the third pump. The dealership is telling me it's most likely bad parts from the factory and they said it's been a real problem lately. So Friday the CEL comes on (PO461) So it's back at the dealership today and they're going to put a 4th fuel pump in it and hope this one works. Anyone else having these kinda problems with MOPAR parts lately?

What exactly is a *MOPAR PART*??? I mean…. those parts could be outsourced and made by a gazillion different other companies - slap a MOPAR label & part number on it…. If you google around, lots of parts are made in CHINA.


Mopar could’ve easily changed to different vendors causing completely different quality output of products/parts.

No the fumes issue was just the stock fuel pump housing had cracked. The first time they replaced the fuel pump the fumes went away. The NEW issue they introduced is the fuel gauge no longer going to F.....and now they're trying fuel pump # 4 to see if the gauge will work lol

I keep assuming they're just installing the wrong fuel pump and that's why the gauge isn't going all the way to F. The jeep runs fine, no more fumes etc... but I'd like the fuel gauge to work

Cost-cutting measures, increased automation, and a shift in focus away from customer satisfaction towards short-term financial gains (aka gouging the customer) the last several years has brought us to where we are... and I don't mean just Stelantis, but nearly every facet of our existence has been corrupted. While the first two topics are what business should be doing, companies have not done so ethically. The latter, the gouging, such as 25% price increases or greater in parts, service, and autos has been plain old greed in action. Any organization that steps up, publicly announces they are changing, and follows through is going to be a market winner. Quality matters shouldn't be a slogan, it should be a mandate.

Doesn't sound like it. Definitely an issue with the sending unit. Should be able to replace the pump w/o the changing the sending unit.......or some hack ass tech slammed it in and fucked up the sending unit.

Problem is, a lot of shops and techs are not actively diagnosing issues, but throwing the parts cannon at it and sending it.

The Jeep should have never left the shop with a fuel gauge that's inop after replacing a fuel pump; that's straight halfassary at its finest. Goes to show the tech, service writer and owner don't give a flying fuck but grabbing your money dot period.

First recommendation.......have that shop actually fix the problem. Second recommendation, find another shop that's actually competent

Yeah, not buying the 4 bad pumps but a install or other un-diagnosed issue. I agree there seems to be a competency issue here.

No, only issue was gas fumes in the garage. Once they installed the first replacement pump is when the gauge stopped working , and continues to fail after 3 pump installs. Today's #4 (finger's crossed, this is getting old.)

The level sensor uses variable resistance to alter the voltage reading of the signal wire to the PCM. After multiple replacement parts, I'm thinking it's time to look at the vehicle side pump wiring for possible damage or loose connection incurred during the module swaps.

It's also been a pain because each time I drop it off they drain the tank....and then give it back to me on fumes....so I have to pray I make it to the closest gas station....and then watch it fail again. At first I assumed it was installed incorrectly. Then I thought it was the wrong part. Apparently the fuel pump unit contains the sensor and /float or whatever parts are responsible for the fuel gauge. I have read that the wrong part could mess with your gauge but they're insisting it's the correct part. We'll see how we make out today, I'm going to have them drive it to the gas station and fill it up before I come for it. Meanwhile my wife's enjoying my gladiator's working gauges and heated seats/steering wheel today while I'm at work without a vehicle unless they fix it lol.

I suggested that after the first pump replacement. They assured me it was the part itself. But I think you're right.

Well I just got the call. They said they cleared the code, checked all the sensors and everything seems fine. They put... $16 worth of gas in it...and said it didn't seem to do anything. So they asked me to come pick it up. I said no, why don't you keep it another day and have one of your more experienced wrenches take a shot at fixing this? I know customer service isn't what it used to be, but wtf.....the gas gauge worked fine until they installed the new fuel pumps...and now it doesn't work and they're like....oh well...everything looks fine to us. SMH
