Of course I just realized today the flaw in my plan. I'm moving states. If I buy a trailer, I probably can't register it in my new state right away, and my old state is expensive as hell. So I'd either have to pay through the nose, or run back and forth with my fingers crossed. So now I'll start asking around to borrow one.

It might be worth asking - I bought a car in CA. The guy I bought it from had the title transferred into my name - while the car was still there, and me, an Iowa resident.
So when the car was delivered to me, I had the CA title in my name, and simply made the switch to Iowa.
Maybe they'll do the reverse - ask the people at the state where you are moving to??
All they can do is say no?

Have you already checked into whether the state you're moving to requires small trailers to be registered/plated? Not all states do.

I know Iowa does - no matter. But they only require a title if it's over something like 2,000 pounds empty.

Yes. Both states require it. Old state charges ~$200 to title and plate. New state is only $20 (no title required for small ones).

Don't they give you a 30 day temporary plate for the trailer? How are you supposed to get it home from the dealer?

In my state(s), the temp plate is only after you pay the fees. Getting home from a private sale you just get to hope the cops aren't a$$#0les

Ahhh, I see the state you have listed. I guess I got "lucky" moving my Dad's pontoon boat a few times. Then finally bought home. At least the tag fee's are flat rated, I got the WTF with GA ad valorm tag fee's. In part why I didn't want my Wrangler Unlimited to be a Rubicon. Heck my 90XJ cost more than my 91XJ and 91MJ tag because it was a "limited" with power windows and seats.
Back O.T I'd look for a "take off" factory one if possible.

In my area, State and local police really do not mess with people and their trailers so long as they have some tag, lights are working and load is secure.

They could write trailer tickers all day long if they wanted on construction and landscaper trailers as most are beat and bent to shit and unreadable most times.

Drive reasonably, don't give them another reason, they won't even look twice. All of the farm equipment, wagons, trailers, construction stuff like you say.......... a utility trailer won't get their attention unless you get really stupid

No luck finding anything locally so far.

I rarely see them bother trailers either, but I know my luck! Unfortunately I would have no tag unless the person I bought from left theirs on there, since I don't have one now and wouldn't get one until I register. I could throw a junk plate on to make it less likely I get pulled over, but then if I do get pulled over the results are worse. Maybe throw one of my antique plates on there and play dumb if I get pulled over..."that was on there when I got it, I just haven't had time to register yet!"

I may try to contact the DMV in the new state to see if they'd register it to me at the new address even though the only "proof of residency" I'll have is the purchasing paperwork for the house.

Toss a couple of bales of hay on the trailer. Explain you are going to feed your horses on another farm.

That'd be worth checking into. With as money hungry as this state is I'd be shocked though.
