What about an actually Safari top, like the ones you can get for the JK? This gives you an additional 5.5" of headroom which would be top height of the cargo area. That could be an additional 10 cubic feet of space in the back. I'd like to see some renderings of that!

@BuiltRight sounds great!

Here's a video you might want to watch to get an idea of the hardware associated with a Land Rover canvas canopy:

Additional requirements...
  • Overall look is very "old-school"; the frame that supports the canvas must allow the canvas to appear very square and angular with vertical sides and back (no slanted angles)
  • Framework does not need to rotate, collapse or "scissor" into the up or down position (manually assembled in position)
  • Framework able to be broken down into smaller parts for on-board or in-garage storage
  • Steel material for strength; final product likely galvanized or powder coated
There will be large manufacturers (Softopper, Bestop, Can-Back) that come out with very "modern" looking canvas tops with scissor operating frames and angled rear window flaps. Don't replicate that look...keep it very old school.

Happy to discuss or assist in the design stage. Worked in an auto upholstery shop in college...and have restored cars...and built race cars. I'm just no help when it comes to welding and CNC...
