I never understood the "prerunner" designation. Pre means before - runner? So they are ahead of something running? Probably like so many other terms on the web - someone came up with it and it stuck.
They were clearly to mimic the lights used on large trucks, such as at the tops of cabs and front edges, etc. They serve no purpose on a standard pickup other than appearances. (and I'm fine with how some of them look - no complaints here) but as for "purpose" - there isn't any.

That article isn't the only one trying to explain the trendy lights. Ran across another a few months ago when someone elsewhere was asking "what's the point in these little lights in the grill or on the roof".
The response in that article was pretty much - there isn't any unless it's a wide truck, it's for looks.
Same reason people swap wheels and tires and other stuff. It's their vehicle and they are personalizing it for their own tastes and/or purposes.

Don’t shoot the messenger, but according to ChatGPT:

The term "prerunner" originated from the world of off-road racing and refers to a specialized vehicle used to preview or pre-run a racecourse before the main event. Prerunners are typically modified trucks or SUVs equipped with enhanced suspension systems, larger tires, and other modifications to handle challenging terrain. They allow racers to familiarize themselves with the course, identify potential obstacles, and make necessary adjustments to their vehicles. Over time, the term "prerunner" has also been adopted by enthusiasts who modify their vehicles for off-road adventures without necessarily participating in races.

Hey, that makes sense. But - that refers to a vehicle.
Not a small light in a grill that really doesn't light up that much compared to other off-road lights, cowl lights and so on.

Prerunners are modified vehicles.

I guess they just took the name to slap on grill lights.

How about asking the guy you bought from. Or the dealer if a trade. Not being sarcastic just think it may be the easiest. I got a call from the guy I sold my Ram to about the light I did to light up when it was in 4 cyLinder mode.

The point of prerunner lights on our trucks is the same point alot of Harley riders rev their bikes alot. It's to garner attention and impress all of us. Thank you guys for the impressive displays you put on for us.

Never insult the Motor Company!

Ninety-five percent of all Harley Davidsons ever built are still on the road today!

The other five percent made it home.

Hey, my first motorcycle was a Harley! It did fine - Italian made Harley. Oil injected 2 stroker. I zipped down the road sounding like a mad hornet (not to be confused with AMC Hornet or Dodge Hornet)

My pre-runner grille lights were plug and play into the headlight wiring harness under the left fender. They come on when the headlights are on.
