So I have been stocking my spare on board fluids box and had assumed my usual Mobil 1 synthetic was ok. In doing a query today the only thing I find as recommended is Mopar 8 and 9 SPD ATF... at $27 a quart! Really? Why?

The transmission is a Zf design; 8HP. You can use Zf lifeguard 8, or just use Maxlife atf.

LG8 and maxlife are have pretty typical additive packages as far as atf goes. If you're interested in further reading, check the ram forums, they've had the 8 speed for a good while now and have already done all the research.

According to the manual, it's a sealed transmission. There is not a way for the owner to check the level or add fluid. That is a dealer activity, only when the transmission actually needs service.

Well there's no dipstick and fill tube........ don't know how you'd do it if you found it low.

I believe there is a port, but it is not easily accessible. From what I remember, of what I read, it is supposed to be good for 100k miles before needing serviced. If something happens under warranty, they probably just swap the whole transmission.

Use the vent tube? I'm wondering how you would know that it is low.

You know it is low when there is ATF all over the undersides of the truck and a puddle on the driveway......

The pump makes sort of a whine sound and it drops out of gear for a moment going fast around tight corners. Yes, I used to do transmission work and a customer had that problem once. It was two quarts low and so was the customer.
Power out here for a day or three....massive storm 80 mph winds trees and lines down everywhere. Working on old small tablet until battery dies. Even phone service iffy.
