I've been looking for a rack to go over my softopper for a while and with the exception of the DatinFab rack, I haven't found anything. My only issue with the Datin rack was aesthetic. I wanted a tube frame to match the rest of the tube details on the truck. So, I decided to try to build what I wanted.
Another issue I solved was the mounting of the softopper. I never liked how giant the mounting brackets were, so I recreated their mounting system with a piece of square tube I welded to the top of my bed rack mounts. Then I just moved the rest of the hardware (snaps and clips) to the square tube. No more giant brackets!
I can't open the softopper with the rack on. That wasn't a priority for me. If I need full bed access I'll just remove the 6 bolts holding the frame on- or take the entire system (rack and softopper) off together.
Another idea I have (that hasn't materialized yet) is to be able to have a second set of mid height bars that I can swap out if I want to run my RTT below cab height. If I'm going with the family I tend to pack heavy and that's why I wanted the softopper. But if It's just me, or I have more highway time to get to my destination, a lower height set of bars could be mounted to the rails that I built.
