So is this pretty common for people to take various trim pieces to customize the look they want?

Yes. It’s personal taste.
In my eyes, take and mix as you wish and you think looks good. Where I have an issue is where people pull parts or decals in an effort to make you think they have a different model, such as Rubicon hood and decals on a non Rubicon model

I think that’s one of the biggest pieces that drawing me in…so much you can do with it all.
So this is a naïve question, but it really the only way I can learn about this stuff - if I know the end product that I want to be similar to that picture I posted, 40 inch tires on what seems to be a 4 inch lift, and I have the option to get various trim pieces, does it matter if I buy a sport or a Rubicon?

My wondering is if I get a Rubicon which has the higher end off road capabilities, when I put a 4 inch lift on it, are they going to take out all of those components out and just replace them with the lift kit materials? Or It it better to buy the Rubicon and add the lift and tires?

This is my Rubicon with a 4" lift and 37" tires. The one pictured has 40" tires.

Without looking at the lift components id say probably. BUT I wouldn't look at this as a bad thing on a rubicon. It WOULD be a bad thing on a Mojave as you're basically taking off everything that makes a Mojave a Mojave. The rubicon "advantage" is the swayer disconnect and front locker, not the ride (this is the Mojave's forte).

They won't take off the sway bar disconnect or lockers.

There is absolutely nothing special about the Rubicon shocks and springs, don’t feel bad putting those in scrap metal. Or getting someone to give you at best $100 for them on local craigslist.

If you want big tires, big lift, and actually flex more than a millimeter then you will be replacing every bit of the suspension

So my wondering is, is it better to just save the cash and buy a sport or a sport s?

I guess the question is what’s the desired endpoint, and how long will it take you to get there. If you plan to drop in big locking geared crate axles, Anti-Rocks, and 40s on day 1 ($40k?), then yeah, not much point to a Rubicon. But very few people do it that way. Stock Rubicon/Mojave/24+ Willys are very capable - a little extra stock tire and lift and a locker might just scratch a lot of itches. Perhaps many many years worth of itches.

Open diffs on 31-32” in the meantime would have no appeal for me personally. Though even stock base Jeeps are capable of a lot. I guess we’re hearing from OP about looks and whatnot but not about other objectives. Deep mud? Extreme crawling? Light fire roads? None of the above? More detail will get you more appropriate answers I think

Fourfa, that’s a great question and I appreciate it.
Realistically, this is going to be used for aesthetic purposes, driving on regally roads, and maybe onto the beach. We do go camping, and I’d take it with us but it wouldn’t be in deep woods.

I would like to have the ability to do some light to moderate off-roading but nothing like the amazing things that I’m sure many of you all do here.

I don’t want it to rub and I want it to be safe without smiling. Additionally, I’d like to be able to get above 65-70 mph on the freeway and not have it crawl from a stoplight.

I love the look of the 40s and I believe the 4 inch lift pictures I have seen with the 40s look sharp.
That’s about as far as I have gotten.

I currently have a ford f150 with a 6 inch lift and 37s and it meets the above needs just fine.

thanks so much for your time and advise!

Gladiator with Max Tow package will get you the wider axles without adding the extra lockers and sway bar disconnect. You'll probably end up regearing anyway for 40s. Any of these trucks stock will take you down fire roads and on the beach.
