This weekend we change to Standard Time.
Let your voices be heard.

In March of 2022, Senator Marco Rubio's
Sunshine Protection Act
to make Daylight Saving Time permanent
easily passed in the Senate
but Nancy Pelosi would not even take it up in the House.

States may not choose when to begin and end Daylight Saving Time.
But, States are free to choose to participate in Daylight Saving Time.
Arizona and Hawaii do not.
States are also free to choose what time zone they are in.
Some states, like Massachusettes and Connecticutt,
have considered dropping Daylight Saving Time
and switching to the Atlantic Time Zone
which would be the same as making Daylight Saving Time year round.

No one in Congress hears us.
So far on this small poll 75% want to stop changing.

Senator Rubio has again introduced the Sunshine Protection Act.
So what is the problem with a bill this popular
that would not cost the taxpayer a dime.

My cynical self says
that it has no traction in the legislature
for that very reason.

There is no lobby for it
and no money in it for graft and corruption.
So I it looks like we are stuck with it
until the swamp figures out how to tax sunshine
and pick winners and losers.

Permanent daylight saving time is stupid; the clocks will forever be out of sync with "real" (i.e. solar) time (I know, it only matches "real" time at one particular longitude in each time zone, but still) If you want to eliminate the twice yearly shift, use real time, and let businesses adjust their hours to times that make sense year round.

But that costs money; the idea of DST is that you change the clocks so businesses all change at once, without the costs associated with posting new hours, etc., etc.

There are 19 states that have passed legislation that will follow the Federal Gov'ts elimination of DST and what time we'll take, either standard time or DST.

DST is no longer needed, as it was created solely for economic purposes. The "safety" argument is hugely flawed.

Living most of my life in the northern reaches of America, not having DST will suck for those along the Canada border. In the middle of summer, it's daylight/dusk/twilight until 9-10pm. It doesn't get fully dark until well after 10pm.

Fourth of July is horrible for us. Firework shows don't start until late, and if you're travelling anywhere, it's midnight before you get home. And then you have to work the next day (if you didn't take it off beforehand).

With going to standard, that means that "sunset" will begin at 8:09pm instead of 9:09pm.

Winter doesn't matter, since we get about 8 hours of daylight as is in WA. I would drive to work in the dark, get to work around "dawn" and leave work as the sun set, arriving home in the dark. Roughly 8am to 4:30pm was daylight. If we went DST all the time, that would be 9am-5:30pm daylight. Yay?

Moving to UT we've actually gained about an hour of light in the winter.

My biggest problem with the change to Standard Time was at 4pm.
Every fiber in my body would begin aching to leave work.
The 60 minutes to 5pm was insufferable and felt like half a day.

Only lately, now that I am retired,
have I figured out the cause of the restlessness.
I was having withdrawal, mild delirium tremens.

You see, Texas did not pass an open container law until 2001.
For 30 years of my working life in Houston
a driver could literally hoist a beer to a passing LEO.
During that time,
it was my custom to have a couple of beers after work,
on the way home.

Don't do as I did, please,
but I would stop at the nearest convenience store
and buy a "toofer", two 16 ounce beers for $1.29.
To reach into the half melted ice bath of primal ooze
for a couple of cold ones,
I was willing to risk being beat down and robbed.
What was I thinking?

Did I stop when the law changed?
Let me just say that by the grace of the almighty
I never had an accident or received a DWI.

A person can't drive in Houston rush hour traffic sober,
was what I would quip.
But please friends, do not drink and drive.

I'm in Texas and I hate the back and forth. Just choose a time and stick with it. An alternative would be to split the difference. Move from Daylight Savings time to 30 minutes back, then leave it for eternity. For instance, 12:30pm Daylight savings time would become the new noon. We will then officially be on New Foundland time.
