Hi all
I wanted to mount a tablet to the driver side decorative screw on the passenger grab handle. I came up with the following solutions
1. Have some sort of a clamp that gives me access to a 1in ball, like this
https://a.co/d/f1Cd28y
2. Follow instructions from someone on the JL forum where they used a self tapping ball mount, or self tapping screw.
I didn't like both of these solutions
1. On the first one, this can cause some markings on the grab handle
2. On the second one, this can cause marring on threads inside the handle, which was a no go for me, since I'd wanna be able to revert easily.
So I decided to do the following:
1. I went to the junkyard, and got the screws from a burnt up jeep. The junkyard was super nice, and gave them to me for free. Note: this is optional since you can use the original one, but I wanted to have extras
2. I bought a 1in ball mount with a 1/4 thread
https://a.co/d/eNfYDWr
3. Using a dremel I cut about 4mm of the threads, to make it sit as flat as possible inside the Allen key hole
4. Using a dremel brush tool, I cleaned all the surfaces
5. Made sure the final cut was good enough, you'd want a little bit of space between the screw head, and the hex head, essentially the threaded side of the ball mount would sink into the Allen key hole of the OEM screw with a little bit of spacing.
6. Using JB Weld, I filed the Allen key hole of the OEM screw with the mix, and then pushed the threaded side of the 1in ball into the hole, then wiped out the excess jb weld.
7. Finally, made sure that it's straight, and placed it upside down to cure overnight
Final product
Cost:
1. 10 Canadian plus tax(ball was on sale)
2. Some borrowed JB Weld from my cousin
Notes:
1. Make sure that the JB Weld does not form a ring above the diameter of the OEM screw, since it's a snug fit
2. You are probably be able to use metal weld
3. I left it to cure 24 hours, before installing it
4. It looks very strong, and I think it will definitely hold, but I'll put an update if there are any issues
Alternative considerations
After I started to think about this, I found there are ready made alternatives but they were too expensive, or not available outside the US(I live in Canada). The two alternatives that are worth considering if you live in the US
1. Bullet Point Solutions, Always shows out of stock, at least here in Canada, Costs about 25 USD plus taxes and shipping, not to mention tariffs and duties, probably comes to 50 CAD
2. CMM makes this, but it was too expensive, especially with shipping to Canada(70 Canadian
), so that option was a non starter
My mod cost me 10 CAD, and 15 mins of elbow grease
Hopefully this helps someone else
