P2 in a series 'How it should have come from the factory'.
[Summary]
Interested in increasing the output and responsiveness of the EcoDiesel power plant, I was considering a Banks Banks PowerPack or a Green Diesel Engineering tune.
Negatives of these tuners, the Banks with the required gauge and Pedal Monster was over $1K, the GDE tune was also over $1k and you have to pull the ECU and ship it.
I found the Edge Pulsar XT for just over $500. It provides 6 selectable levels of power through a mobile app connected via Bluetooth. You can also set your accelerator mapping (aka Pedal Commander) per power level. Very cool.
[Install]
The install is relatively simple, inline connector to fuel pressure sensor, inline connector to MAP sensor, wire to battery + and a small multi-wire connector through the plug on the driver side firewall. In the cabin there is a small wire than can be fished behind the console to the glove box where it plugs into the CAN bus multi-connector. Another inline connector to the accelerator pedal and the harness plugs into the XT module.
The module can be fitted under the steering wheel, leave access to the module open as the phone needs to be close (inches) for the first connect only, then button up.
Install the tuner app on your mobile device, turn on the ignition and hold device close to the module for the first pairing.
The tuner app has additional functionality like pulling basic trouble codes and changing tire size among other abilities.
There are six power levels from 0 (stock) to 5 (highest). You can also change the throttle mapping setting per level. Select the power level in the app, once it finishes I close the app, turn off the ignition, open the door and then it's ready to go.
[Review]
I've been driving on level 3 (default pedal setting) for a couple of weeks and it is a significant change in power and responsiveness. Exactly what I was looking for, aggressive accelerator action will push you back in the seat a bit and there is nearly no lag to the power now. It's really fun to drive. If you figured out the EcoDiesel was not the economy option but the way to get near V8 levels of torque in the Gladiator, this mod will get you the rest of the way there.
Turbo lag is significantly reduced and power is increased. I nearly stopped swearing from catching the engine off-boost
It makes the truck feel a fair bit more nimble, which is impressive for a nearly 6K pound vehicle.
With this mod plus my suspension update (P1) the truck is far more driveable & fun than the stock form. Its more nimble/chuckable on-road, point and shoot and stable up over 80mph.
P3 will be sound damping, headliner, 4-way active stereo and rear seat delete.
I pay for all of my mods and am not compensated in any way for what I post.
Cheers!
