Did anyone install an Espar or Webasto Diesel heater in the Gladiator Eco-Diesel? Would like to install it to het the cab from the truck and also my Alu-Cab camper. Any advice or source for an install set would be much appreciated. THX
We have run Webasto fuel fired engine heaters, in our buses, off and on for years. The story is always the same, they are great when they work. We get a season or two out of most of them and a few last for years.
I had an Espar heater in a Mercedes diesel. Ml350 Bluetec didnt like starting much below zero. Most the time it worked fine, but I’d never use one unless you have cold starting issues.
Speaking from the unimog side of the world, they do not like to sit unused. They are a small jet heater and fuel fouling will lead to element fouling, water in the fuel will lead to wet no starts... no fun.
That said, they work wonderfully well for cab supplemental heating and can pull double duty with an exchanger to provide hydronic coolant preheating and even fuel preheating.
My preference would be to use it to heat a loop that heats the spaces. You don't realize all the BTU but you also don't stink of diesel exhaust or display monoxide poisoning. Paired with a secondary loop off the engine and you can heat the box while motoring and then heat the motor while sleeping.
I can't speak to the espar or wabasto models but I have two diesel heaters. I've got one (2kw) in my teardrop trailer and a 5kw in my workspace. Since the euro and Chinese models share the same form factor (size, etc) you can use the information available on the web (mostly YouTube) as a good source. If you'd like to do more research, the best info I have found is on YouTube. Look for either "John McKay" diesel heaters or "David Makluckie" (spelling?). John McKay has a 17 part video series on YouTube and is, in my humble opinion, pretty much the bible for diesel heaters. David Makluckie has a ton of information more related to maintenance and troubleshooting.
Having used my diesel heater in my teardrop for three years now, I can say with some certainty that even the smallest model (2kw) is going to be waaaayyy too big for a pickup. It would work well though in a topper/camper.
Be advised, they are pretty simple, but have a long learning curve....
