Good times! I been in Jeepney's from Subic City to Luzon and Manila. Learned to speak Tagalog from riding on those things. What was the name of the big bar outside of Clark? The Tiki Hut?

I only remember them as the one with the red door and the one with the blue door. There was Nippa Hut (sp) and Murphs with music.

Nippa Hut I remember, and perhaps Lil Joe's. Lil Joe's always had the coldest San Miguels. One night, drink three and be under the table, the next night put down twenty with no effect. Manufacturer's quality control at its best! To this day, I don't think any first beer tasted better, then the first beer in the PI. The first one went down .......... FAST!

First time there, monsoons, the regulars laughed at me when I put on a rain poncho.

What's worse, sweat or rain?

It was the Nippa Hut. Thanks for that! It's been over 30 years and I was a crayon eating Jarhead at Subic Bay so it was killing me trying to remember. I think I still have a box in the attic with those bamboo cups.

Quality control was weak but I have also been drugged at some of those places and had the same experience. One night you could drink until dawn and the next you were staggered after 2. An area outside of Subic called Barrio Baretta(?) was bad for that. 3 of us watching "Foxy Boxing" barely made it out. Yet they are still fond memories!

In San Angeles (SP) city, outside of Clark, when I was there, there was an issue with members of one ideology, who wished to do harm to GI's. We were counseled to never go "Downtown" alone. Also to never drink anything you did not open, for the reason you state. There was a young Lady at Lil Joe's who kind of covered my back when I was there. Had to pay, a "Bar Fine" when we spent time together, a sweet girl, and nothing ever happened between us. She sang in a choir, and I went to combined concert rendition of the Messiah from Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. Some great memories coming back.

All good rules and we always tried to follow the rule about open beer but when you're a Marine and they tell you "don't .....", we always did it anyway. Camp Pendleton "Don't go to Hollywood, Tijuana, etc." So on our first night we went to Hollywood and had a blast, next night was Tijuana, visited friends on the third, and gone to Okinawa by the 4th.
One of the key reasons Prohibition never worked and the War on Drugs is a flop. Once you tell someone they can't do it, your inner demons won't to know why :)

Worth a search, began with WWII JEEPS left in the PI, and it created a world of its own.
