50 ends a YEAR?! I guess I was fortunate and got myself on the “couple thousand a week” plan for just over 6 years. Those were fun days. More fun when it was 9mm and 5.56. Not so much fun when it was a lot of 7.62 from a bolt gun. Talk about a shoulder turned into hamburger. Silhouette with 10” bulls for 9mm and 5.56 and 2” bulls for .308. Used to mess with the new guys and tell em they put their targets on upside down. The stupidity of youth.

There are exceptions, either because a department actually cares and is lead by a good Chief and not the accountants, or because the LEO is an actual “gun guy” and seeks to be his personal best so he digs into his own pockets.

Also some Fed agencies do take their training seriously depending on the role of the individual, but you can’t take for granted that a “law enforcement” background means the person actually knows what they are doing. Had the pleasure of teaching a few Marines how to shoot pistols. Their training at the time was HIGHLY geared to rifle with the pistol as an afterthought. Those guys were HUNGRY and really grateful to learn

We had LEO's come to USPSA matches and usually finished almost last. Not many returned for more. The ones that did were interested in getting to be better with a pistol.
Yes cross draw big bore revolvers out in the woods works well.

BTW you’re showing your age buddy. The modern 7.62 Precision Bolt Rifles (they are only sniper rifles when in the hands of a Sniper) have almost no recoil. Mine weights in at a dainty 16lbs and with the muzzle brake there is so little recoil that I can actually see the holes/marks appear on the target.

50 rounds with a handgun is not even a good warmup. For training we bring 30 cal cans full of loose ammo out to play and we stop shooting when we empty the can(s) or there’s blood in the guns. Even when I bring the boomers out it’s 100 rounds minimum per gun. I have ammo cans full of .44 mag ammo. When a bear is charging you that is not a good time to find out if you can empty your gun accurately

BTW you’re showing your age buddy. The modern 7.62 Precision Bolt Rifles (they are only sniper rifles when in the hands of a Sniper) have almost no recoil. Mine weights in at a dainty 16lbs and with the muzzle brake there is so little recoil that I can actually see the holes/marks appear on the target.

I’ll take my Remmy 700P any day of the week. Thing will take a beating and still put rounds on target at 1000m with basic maintenance and good technique.

One of the best precision guns in history, long favorite of many PDs for a good reason!!! I rebuilt my buddies 700 and got it to shoot under .5 MOA with basically ANY Match ammo I would feed it.

My 7.62 was built from a brand new 40X that was completely taken apart right out of the box and blue printed, re assembled and custom bedded into a new stock. I went old school with it with a Leupold LR Mark 4 and mil dots. I’m too lazy to learn the new reticules and my Tactix 8 watch has a ballistics program in it

That particular gun is a Ruger 5 1/2” Old Vaquero in .44 Mag. About as good as it gets where the most likely encounter is a moose or bear. My other favorite is my full custom Stainless S&W .44 Mag Mountain Gun, also carries cross-draw. But at times I will carry my Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm. Or, any of the fun handgun boomers sitting in my safe ranging from .357 to 500 Mag.

Funny you should mention that. I'm turning my son-in-law's well used old Ruger 4.5" Blackhawk in .41 Mag (one of his favorite guns) into a semi-custom. I already swapped the scared Aluminum grip frame for a Stainless one and its also getting a stainless ejector rod/housing and base pin. All stainless parts will be polished bright. As far as I know Ruger never made a stainless .41 Mag BH so I'm having a gunsmith friend of mine rechamber a .357 Mag cylinder to .41 Mag and that will be fitted to the gun at a later date. I MIGHT have to donate one of my precious real Sanbar Stag grip sets to the projec, or I might go with Black Buffalo Horn grips. Don't know yet..

Sorry. Don’t have a video of my last drive by on Bambi. Too much evidence to help fish and game. Seriously though I’m not photoing or videoing when I’m shooting. That’s my time for me. Running drills is almost like therapy for me. After a good session of scoot and shoot, transitions, and reload drills all is right with the world.

Oh HELL YEAH!!! That's why when I go out my wife won't expect me back for a loooooooong time.

I actually I video myself all the time, not for posting online but because it's a great way to see where I'm developing bad habits and where I can shave time. I also send the videos to folks I tryst for their critique. But yeah, I agree with you, there is nothing more mind cleaning that a session of "runnin''n'gunning"!!!

I normally do a few slow accuracy drills just to warm up. Then I go to "visualizing". That means there is no "drill" as such. I just set up random targets and in my head visualize a situation and then run, dive, shoot, kneel in random independent movements in split second decisions. One handed strong/weak. Use my car, rocks, cactuses as cover, shoot out of my windows, laying on my back, side, between my legs, under the Jeep (carefully) etc, etc...

A few years ago I had a massive eye opener when one of my mentors came up behind me and pushed me to the ground while I was shooting a drill. I stopped shooting and asked him what the hell was he doing? He said, "If you don't practice firing as you fall what's going to happen when you do?"... Hummmmmmmm

One of the best trainers I've ever met has a class on worst case scenarios. In one of the "lessons" he ties folks strong arms with tourniquets and then sprays them and their guns with fake blood while they are shooting. Talk about an eye opener!!!!!

So this training is not for everyone, we are talking next level here. All I'm saying is that there is more to training than standing still at 5 yards in a lane in your favorite gun club. And this is directed at a general audience that doesn't understand this, not you.
