One year ago, I didn't want to spend more on a Rubi or other higher end model and purchased a new Willy's Sport (base manual) well under sticker. It was a great truck and did almost everything until I purchased a camper. Also, being the only one in the family who can/wants to drive a manual was exhausting on road trips.
16000 miles later, Carvana offered me 4k more than I paid new, and now Im in a new max tow automatic which fits our need so much better. (They relisted it at 46k used, 10k over what I paid).
The only way I was able to pull this off is the upside-down down car market and my willingness to look at dealerships located much further away. I could have saved even more ordering but needed to be able to trade and get a new truck the next day.
TrueCar, and Auto Trader helped a lot to see what was available. Negotiating OTD price without a trade and having the dealerships try to match worked ok. (Always negotiate Price; never payments)
Some dealers wanted to charge more for cash, because they make money off financing. Others wanted to add on exorbitant fees. I told them all that if they could beat my lowest found APR, that Id be happy to finance though them.
I also asked in the initial OTD pricing phase if they offered extended warranties, service contracts on oil changes, paint protection and more. I made sure to say that I needed all of those things to the sales guy, and that might have helped with the OTD price. Of course when in the finance managers office, I declined everything additional.
I'm extremely pleased with the new JT. Even with the Interest rate increase and the added cost of going with the max tow and other packages, I did pretty good. Looking in a 500 mile range of where I live and buying a cheap one way airplane ticket ended up saving a lot. Did I get the best deal ever? Probably not, but I wanted to share my experience here Incase someone has a horde of local dealerships with only JTs in the 55-80k range.
