I've typically saved receipts, marked the mileage/odo on them, then enter into a spreadsheet. It's amazing the differences I found with some tank-fulls with my SX4. One time I hit 28 mpg, and a few months later it was 18. Normally I was in the low 20s with that car.
It was nice to track the long-term mpg - like "what did I get this year average" with that spreadsheet.
