On Thursday I had the completed canopy and roof tent fitted and Friday I was camping. Generally, very pleased, especially considering the cost point of all the aluminium and work that went into the canopy (1650USD). Following niggles however;
  • Canopy to tailgate dust seal has come off (appreciate it's difficult to stick to bedliner).
  • Not sure about the chrome handles.
  • Tent is a cheap one (and it shows) terrible sag in the porch roof and the mattress is rubbish.
  • I was expecting about 120 -150kg for both but it has had more of an effect on ride height and acceleration than I hoped for. It's still able to climb, cross and dune bash the worst Qatar has but the rear springs are slightly compressed. I'd welcome thoughts on airbags to support v's springs.
So, lots of camping over the winter months (and to escape the World Cup 'fever' here) and refinement of storage and packing before the journey home to the UK in spring next year.

Very interesting. Would you be able to share more details and pictures of the canopy? When I move from my 1 ton axle swap to outfitting the bed, I belive this is what I want to go for. Enclosed, lockable, strong, mounted rtt level with roof line for low CG and able to drive under lower clearance trees/garage doors, etc..

I've only seen one other person share pictures of a half height canopy/topper. I am surprised there aren't more custo.s out there, or even a commercial manufacturer.

I will likely end up fabbing my own, so like to keep my eyes open for design cues

I have sneaked a handful of the build photos into other posts I think, but here they are. Very happy to date and just under 12 months in, only the following observations.

One hinge broke (replaced).
The canopy to tailgate seal is not totally effective.
The ARB Esperance 2 tent is great and light.
Canopy is just clamped to the bed; no holes and it works fine.

What is the measurement from the bed deck to the opening?
This looks to be exactly what I have been looking for.
