I'm looking for an emergency winch to take with me when I go off-road that can help pull me out of trouble if I get stuck.
I found a thread on electrics, but not hand crank.
A simple hand winch and mount for my 2" hitch receiver would be quite an upgrade to my come alongs. There are a million brands of winches and mounts out there, does anyone have any advice on what is the best direction to go?
Thanks in advance.

A hi lift jack can serve multiple purposes, jack or winch. Pack some tow straps, and some shackles and it should work better than a hand winch.

I used one of these for years. Not a hand crank but a good upgrade to most come along's. It pulled me out of lots of mud holes and pretty handy for odd jobs around the place.
It's slow but will get you out.

I thought about getting one of those years back, not a first choice to recover a vehicle but it would and has other uses too. I bought a Mas-Dam come a long I've used it quite a lot.

I've got a 2 ton gear drive hand cranked winch to lift hard top and anything else off my trailer.... about 5 minutes cranking you will stop and grab a electric drill / driver or impact wrench to spin it.

Now on use of a High-Lift jack as a winch I've done that too a few times the last time was to recover a large 4 wheeler stuck in a swamp that started with a "nice walk in" and few shackles and synthetic winch line in deer season I wish I would have had my come a long in my Jeep that night.

THAT'S what I ended up with. They're built by Wyeth-Scott. It turns out they are located not 30 miles from my house in Newark, Ohio. They gave me a factory tour and care and use tips. American cast iron finished, machined, painted and assembled on site. Great folks.......!
