I'm headed up there this weekend. Can anyone who has been there share some tips/tricks/knowledge of the area?

Prepare for a LOT of dust.
I agree. Don't take your doors or top off. I was going every other weekend and I would see people with all of their gear off and think, "Uh oh!"??

im leaving everything on since it’s the wife and kids first trip off-road. We’ll save the door/top off adventure for dinner in town.

Good idea. Unless it rained recently it will be very dusty. I was going every other weekend. I've got about a half dozen videos on my YT channel.

But..... see if you can link up with someone else while you're out there. The good thing about HF is the most of the offroaders out there are pretty friendly. I wheeled with an Offroad group, so we had every type of vehicle in the group. Which made it better. But there's always folks out there. I've jumped in and wheeled with a Toyota group before. Lol. I don't know what your skill level is, but If you see some other folks doing obstacles, stop, get out and watch. Best way to learn.

If you plan on doing anything extreme, you'll want to be around others. They'll spot you. If you've never been there before or only a couple times, get a map. That way you don't get crossed up and end up on an extreme trail. That's if you don't plan on doing anything extreme.

If you're a veteran, you get a discount. Slow down on the main road. They'll get ya. But more so for the dust (if it's bad). Pack a lunch. If not, the food truck is usually out there, and they have a store with snacks. They have an air up station. If it seems like there's no air, there's a timer by the building for the compressor. Many people don't know that.

Best thing is to take a few pics and have fun!

definitely taking snacks and drinks.

a couple of local clubs are going so there will be more jeeps there. I don’t know what routes they’ll be taking or anything like that and I’m unfamiliar with the park so I thought I’d ask.

I appreciate your input!

Yea. I would roll with San Antonio 4x4 (2 Fat Guys Offroad shop) all the time. They would tell everyone, don't do anything you're not comfortable with. With that being said, If you're in a group or on a route and it looks sketchy, go around. You're going to have fun and enjoy the day. That's the main goal!

No problem! Too bad I'm not back in TX. I'd roll with ya. I love running the trails with others and putting other rigs in my videos.

Stay safe out there!!!?

Also, I would get a hitch skid before you go.

I thought about it but came to the conclusion that something that adds length and reduces ground clearance is gonna drag more than it would without adding one. When I get back I’ll let you know if that was a mistake or not haha

That's the reason that I've never owned a hitch skid. 4yrs with this particular jeep and never owned one and 3yrs out at HF and never needed it. Although I have hit the trails out there and 30 minutes later on a rock somewhere learned that my hitch was still in.???

Ok I did it!

So. Much. Dust!

we took the doors off because the wife wanted too. She volunteered to clean it so…. Whatever you want, dear!

we didn’t do too many technical trails, actually probably none at all. We did park road 2 up to North Pole and then down to park road 3 and over to park road 1 then we headed out. We went slow, lots of jeeps and side by sides out there.

I picked some bad lines and dragged skid plates 1 or 2 times. And I came down on my right rear LCA mount. Did not drag the tow hitch.

All in all we had a good time.
Thanks for everyone’s input!

We’re camping out there New Years weekend with 2 other couples. Had some rain so should be less dusty than last time we went. We usually take side by sides but ours is broke and we all have Jeeps now.

I'm planning a trip out there with a couple of buddies in a week or so. I'm essentially in stock mojave that is my wife's daily so banging it up would be ... err ... not well received. I see different opinions here on the need for a hitch skid.

We don't intend to be doing any of the extreme trails but their 6 diamond rating system is a bit obtuse.

Anyway, is this the skid type protection you guys are talking about? For $100, that's a pretty easy choice. (https://www.amazon.com/RENO-Receive...Road/dp/B0CCRND4S3?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1)

Given the trip is around the corner, not sure I have time to order and install a set of these. Anything else you guys are using for bed protection (if you didn't get the Rubicon)? https://www.extremeterrain.com/redrock-4x4-jeep-gladiator-bed-side-rock-rails-jg2317.html

Thanks in advance for the advice.
