How do you lower down when its time? Looks like you would have to climb up somewhere to hit the release on each one
Yeah, I have a 6 foot ladder on my wall nearby so typically I just place it an dlower it enough to hook on. I initially just had them low enough to start, but driving in and out of the garage often I would clank against the hooks. Not a huge deal cause theyre rubber coated and dont damage anything, it was just more annoying than anything. So I raised them just enough to clear since I dont use it all the time, especially now that its cooler and I don't have the top off. It just ne of those things thats there when I need it. Since I recently got the Bestop Sunrider as well, the rear hardtop piece typically stays on now and I just pop the front when needed and dont have to worry about the freedom panels any longer. I guess the hoist will come back into play if and when I ever remove the Sunrider and decide to go all off.

Mine works like a charm. All Husky brand cam buckles and hooks. Although the hooks say you can go into drywall, I went into the studs.

only difference I did from the video is since my ceiling is pretty high unlike his mini car port, and the hooks obviously attach to a lower point on the hard top in the rear, I went with 10foot cam buckles in the rear and 6 foot up front. Home Depot for the win.

I'm thinking of doing this soon...

Any issues with the straps hooks damaging the hard top undernreath?

I assume those "eye" hook attachments on the ceiling have been fine while drilled into the ceiling joists?

No issues with anything. Only issue I've had which isn't a problem with the straps or anything to do with the hoist itself, is that based off where I park and where I attached into the ceiling joists, its not perfectly straight. Its straight but theres a slight angle. Again thats only based off me preferably drilling into the actual studs in the ceiling and not just the drywall with the anchors. I wanted more stability. I could fix that by parking more centered on them but doesnt leave a whole lot of room for my wifes car.

In any case because of that slight angle, when I drive out while the tops on the hoist, I have to kind of push it away slightly as Im rolling out so the bottom edge doesnt scratch the paint on the interior roll bar. But again all that is just based on my set up ,nothing to do with the hoist itself. Its been flawless.

Thanks for the reply! I think this is the method I might copy but i may use some sort of support that runs underneath the hard top when it lifts up to the ceiling.

My set up is similar, except I used a Kayak lift instead of ratchet straps

I also used a piece of unistrut across the front, bolts through the top's mounting holes, lift hooks through the bar. Rear is a 2x4 flat, with u bolts through, straps from the lift kit up to the hooks.

I don't have the space to lift directly off the truck, so I remove the HT outside and carry it in, sit it on top of a patio cooler I had sitting around while I set up the lift. I've been eyeballing some hand crank winches to upgrade, still trying to stay on the cheap, afraid I'd have to start mostly from scratch

People Work?
Nice job.
I think the Hoist-A-Top rig probably would've worked there too.
Love running mine up and down with a cordless drill.

Have any pics of this setup?

Looks like I started this thread 2 years ago and never updated it with what I did for my hoist setup. I went with the Home Depot ratchet straps. It’s been good enough for how often I’ve removed it.

Since I have the room, I installed a Harken Hoist a number of years ago for JK/JL's. It was a fairly easy conversion to have it handle the JT top. It's an easy to use 1 person set up.
