I get pretty amped up for some overlanding when I'm reading fiction as well.

I've never been more excited (and a bit scared) to go to Texas area than after reading Cormac McCarthy books.

This is an area I could work on. I have done a lot more backpacking than overlanding and I find that is easier for me to plan. Maybe because I've done it longer?

Anyways, I get a lot of ideas from other people and then start researching that area on my own. There are a lot of videos and blog posts if you start digging. Then I use OnX and Trails Off-road. OnX is what I use more, especially on the trail. It's very easy to use the map to find pre-planned campsites. I don't always use them, but it's nice to have options planned. Youtube has been helpful to really understand what kind of terrain you will be on but it's time consuming to watch videos.

Love this thread. The west has a real abundance of opportunities. East coast is fun but much less open terrain to choose from.
I assume some nifty Civil War battlefields nearby? Any way to camp within range of Appomattox, Fredericksburg, etc?

I know there is some but I have not explored it. Generally stay to the south and west parts of the state. Northern Virginia traffic is no joke.

Ioverlander, Gaia, Google maps and earth. All of my backpacking trips are a no road area deep into the Sierra's.

Anyone else go to Youtube to get eyes on the trail / sights in the days before a trip? Or just bookmark for later or "Like" for future reference?
