I feel like FCA has a fascination with red (not to mention all black with no contrast). Their all red leather interiors are simply awful, but they are bound and determined to link them to their SRT line for example. Some may find them sporty; I think they are garish/awful/off-putting etc. I love the Durango SRT, but the all-black and all-red options keep my money in my pocket. Finally (hoping) FCA is adjusting to market with the new Ram interiors. Quite nice.
We spend a lot of time inside our vehicles. To me, the interior dynamics are huge. I have (with my boat) and will (with the JT) adjust my exterior color to coordinate with the interior color I like. In the case of the JT, I can do that. With the 'Rango, I couldn't.
In short, I believe they are attached to signature colors. That's understandable from a marketing context. But I feel it doesn't necessarily transfer from one model to another (Challenger to Durango; Wranger to JT).
I also wonder if Jeep's research referred to above is outdated . . . I merely wonder.
