If your "ESS" (Engine Start Stop) system quits working when your car battery is low, it's because the system is designed to prioritize battery health and will disable itself to prevent the battery from draining further, meaning a low battery charge is a common reason why your stop-start feature won't activate; it's a safety mechanism to ensure your car can reliably start when needed.

As usual, I learned this the hard way.

After weeks of enjoying ESS-free driving,
my 2021 JTR refused to start.
Fortunately in my own carport.

So the moral to the story:
if the ESS is no longer annoying,
it is not a good thing.
Check the battery.

If only it were that simple. :) You should cruise through the battery section of this forum for more info.

You may want to check the smaller ESS battery as well. That being bad can ruin the main battery I believe. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

It is at this point everyone should realize, now is the time to look at what the Jeep is telling you.

FWIW

I have 2-2020 jeeps. I have had battery trouble with one. The batteries on that jeep were replaced under warranty. My other jeep started throwing ESS warnings the month after my 3 years/36,000-mile warranty had expired. I replaced the main battery with a more powerful battery, removed the aux battery, and pulled fuse F42. Everything on the Jeep worked exactly like it would with 2 batteries. Later I added a Stop/Start disable device. I am very happy with this change. I will do the same with my second jeep in the future at the first sign of battery issues.
