Ok, this is a weird one. I disabled it more than a year ago but now all of a sudden it’s started intermittently working again on its on.

Can anybody tell me how that’s even possible with the fuse pulled and the battery terminal disconnected?

You didn't disable ESS. All you did was disconnect the aux battery and prevent the system from looking for it.
Not sure why you think that was to disable ESS - most threads on that battery disconnect topic explain all it does is disconnect the aux battery

Of course, we have to ask -what have you done that may have made things different?
Perhaps you put a new battery in, maybe you have driven it more/longer/farther, getting the main battery finally charged, maybe you charged the main battery?
Who knows why it didn't work before - but you certainly didn't disable it. That was a coincidence.

So I followed the directions in multiple threads - most of which you e participated in. I’ve done nothing to it and obviously don’t fully understand the process or I wouldn’t be asking. So again, my question is: is it possible for it to work without the F42 fuse and the terminal disconnected?

If I’m understanding you correctly it will still work even with the aux battery disconnected And the fuse pulled?

Yes. In fact, it's not just possible, it actually should work with that aux battery disconnect.
F42 has nothing at all to do with ESS working or not. And it can work fine with just one battery.

All pulling that fuse does is prevent the battery from being checked when starting the truck. If it can't check the battery by opening the PCR, then it can't see the battery is missing.
The main battery still feeds things through the wiring between the main battery and the aux battery to N1.
It's not a way to stop ESS, it's a way to disconnect the aux battery and not trigger errors on the dash.

Ok, so basically all you’re doing is disconnecting the aux from the system in a way so as not to throw a code and as a consequence prevents the shitty aux from draining the main?

Well that makes more sense now. I was under the impression it was a way to keep the ESS from working in the first place.

Also prevents the shitty main from draining the aux.
Neither are even "good" batteries.

I went and got the best one I could find when I replaced the original.

If you just did that then that is why it probably started working your main has probably been weak for some time .
