I am believer in trucks having LSD at a minimum. Unloaded pickups are very light in the rear and it can be easy to spin a single tire even on dry roads. I live in South Florida but occasionally it has engaged during rainstorms, particularly in streets that get muddy or whatever, pulling a boat up a ramp without always pulling the 4wd lever... We travel so it has come in handy in colder climates, the mountains etc. It's not much money and makes a ton of sense to have.

I'm looking for advice on Auburn Select-A-Loc LS to full locking diffs. Does anyone have any experience with them? Do they handle like a factory LS diff? Are the cone clutches similar to disc clutches? What kind of life expectancy can I expect? Is it a reliable unit, and can it be installed by a competent mechanic, or do I have to have a specialty shop do it?

No experience with that particular differential, but I had a sports car in the 80s with factory limited slip which wore out, maybe around 50K miles. Drove it hard. Then had an Auburn LS with cone clutches installed. Lasted the rest of the life of the car, out to 250K miles.
