I was told that the destination charges come from averaging the cost of shipping the vehicle everywhere in the USA, bar Hawaii. I guess to make it a level playing field... that way people in Maine, Washington, California and people across the street from the factory all pay the same.

That was my understanding also that the shipping charge was a levelized spread out cost. Even if you could take delivery at the factory gate, you would still have to pay the shipping charge.
