I recently switched to an iPhone, which has given me some new thoughts.

I think Americans probably can't understand how crazy about iPhones are in China. For you, it's just an everyday item, but many people see it as a status symbol because it's very expensive for Chinese people's wages. In the past, some people even sold their kidneys to buy an iPhone, hence its nickname, "kidney phone."

Of course, I'm not saying this to discuss politics—I know that's forbidden on forums—I'm just curious what phones you all use.

Yes, I admit it. I got sucked into the Apple ecosystem long ago.

I have always been a die hard Samsung Android phone user. About 5 years ago I purchased a Macbook which prompted an Iphone purchase and eventually there was enough Kool-aid in my system to prompt an apple watch! LOL Seriously I really did enjoy the Apple Eco System. However in my line of work you have to touch both worlds. Eventually the Macbook developed the infamous keyboard issue, so back to PC I went, Samsung kept coming up with cooler phones, and really nice looking watches and the rest is history. I now have a Samsung Zfold 7. The best phone Ive ever had. I must say the "ecosystem" of Samsung to Samsung with Microsoft is actually gotten way better. However, no one does it better than Apple IMHO

I have the mil spec Kyocera duraforce-pro-3, Why, because I suck at keeping things nice! soo I need the most rugged electronics i can get
Prior I have had the Pro 1 and 2. I only upgraded each time to pass a phone to my kids and upgrade

These phones are all most bombproof. I have dropped it on the trail in soupy water without issue and the Pro 2 fell out of my dual sport bike's holder and bounced down a dirt road without even a crack one af the coolest features is its one of the few phones that still has a field removable / swap-able battery without the use of tools

from the web:

https://www.kyoceramobile.com/rugged-devices/duraforce-pro-3

  1. Recognizes touch input while wearing gloves. The material, texture, and thickness of the glove as well as how it fits your hand will impact performance. Individual results may vary. Glove Touch Mode default is set to “off” and must be turned “on” through settings.
  2. Up to 5 feet on concrete. Compliant with a military standards test (MIL-STD-810H Method 516.6, Procedure IV “Transit Drop”). Device may not perform as tested in all conditions. Test performed in controlled environment. Do not attempt.
  3. Certified IP68 waterproof at 6.5 ft for up to 30 minutes. Before immersing your phone in water, make sure the device’s back cover and charging port cover are completely sealed with no gaps. Avoid using your phone in salt water. Always rinse your phone in fresh water after it has been submerged.

Back in the day….. 😆 we were Mac people, but have wofted back-n-forth with computers. Actually, we have both currently. So, we’re not new to Apple.
We’ve had many Apple devices over the years …. including several ipods. Now, it’s Iphones, Watches, and Ipads.

Almost everything is integrated with our lives…. and we certainly don’t use the devices for all of its potential. The simple things like sharing calendars, lists, other things, being able to access garage doors, turn on lights, yadda yadda yadda.

I've always had Android smart phones, and I've been using the Galaxy series since S4 (I have an S24 now).

My work phone is an iPhone, and I cannot stand it. It's pains me to try and do anything on it.

Android.
We had a lot of trouble with iPhones at work (and things apple for that matter)

Did you know that some iPhone users are so "elitist" (yes, it's seen as a status thing in the states, too) that Apple allows you to block texts seen as coming from an Android? Now that's where our society is now - one seen as superior, thus the users are superior and they must block messages from inferior people using inferior products.

I stayed away from Apple seeing how they treated people who used their iPods years ago, but with a computer. They made it very difficult to use, and forced you into handling your music the way Apple says you should handle it. I don't like being corralled and controlled - I choose how to lay out the music on my devices.
The iPod my wife gave me years ago was used maybe 3 or 4 times - the software sucked. Of course the product is dead now, but that's an example of my not liking the products. Let ME choose - don't guide me down your path.

It's also one reason I moved to Google Pixel phones - Samsung, for example, will not allow phone updates over the cell data. You MUST be on wifi to update the phone - well, what if your home data IS your cell data? My wife's phone hadn't received updates for a couple of years because Samsung locked out the ability to update over cell data.
Pixel - I can choose. It's unadulterated, pure Android.
I can update my phone anywhere
My wife has to go were there's free wifi and sit to update it.
Give me a break.

Samsung Android since it first came out.
My UTV has a built in screen like our Jeeps, but it's Apple Carplay only. I can connect my android phone via bluetooth for music, but not much else. It does have built in nav, but it's not specific enough for my needs (atv trail maps), so I picked up an older Samsung ruggedized tablet that I will mount and use for navigation.

that is exactly why when the I-phone came out I went to the Storm instead. I like android for the most part due to the ability to truly customize (aka root it)

"Elitist" is a very apt term. If we're talking about the whole package, the Chinese version would be a combination of Lululemon, Starbucks, Tesla, and Apple.

This thread changed my impression. I thought Apple would be the most common brand in the US, but it seems many people use other brands of phones too.

iOS is the most popular mobile operating system in the US, but Android is second, and IMNHO more popular with people who like to tinker and customize their things; like Jeep owners tend to be.

iPhone. I never have any problems. They just work and last for years and take all the abuse I throw at trim. Sometimes literally. I finally replaced my 12 pro max with a 17 pro. It still worked fine, I just got tired of a huge phone. I got $600 for it too.

I’ve had a few androids and they were a disaster. They have a mind of their own.

Yes.. I don't like Apple forcing things certain ways - this is how we think you SHOULD use our product, no personalization, etc. I like the unadulterated android system, pure and clean, on the Pixel phones. There's none of this crap the phone companies or even the phone company slips in there. I've looked over other phones, like the Samsung phone my wife has - Samsung butchers the OS and slips their own crap in there and forces certain things on you.

It's why I went PC clones decades ago - my first one had a flip-up top case on it. No tools needed to open it and boy, did I modify that thing. I even side-loaded a couple of apps on our other TV. (New TV is too locked down, can't figure it out......... yet. The software company says - gee, we don't support that, or that version of the app any more, but I got it working on the other TV)

At work we had iPhones and more than once, they were bricked by updates, a disaster to support. I was glad when some chose the android instead.

Even my son - an Apple nut, mac books and so on, uses android phones.

You can clean up the Samsung phones a little or a lot, depending on how hard you want to work.
But yea, some people want everything to just work, and don't care that they have no say in HOW it works. Others like to customize and personalize and tweak things.
Heck, my wife and I both have the exact same phone, but we've configured and customized them so differently one can barely use the other's.
