Other than paint, I finished up the fabrication. I welded the square tube to the plate last night, and just now softened the edges with the flap wheel and wire brushed everything. Test fit is perfect. I’ll paint the top before tightening it down though. I’ve got some hammered look paint somewhere I think I’ll use. I’m not painting the vise for any reason. It’s original paint from 1977, and I’m leaving it original.

Cleaned up and two coats of hammered pewter paint is on. I’ll leave it the warm garage until at least tomorrow before bolting it to the vise. But I’m happy with how it turned out. I decided to leave the axle shaft raw. Looks more like a reused part that way to me. I’ll clean the wheel at some point and maybe it’ll be a good spot for Jeep vendor stickers.

I did a similar project out of a F350 rear brake drum. You may find there isn’t enough weight in the base and it will be wobbly. I filled the brake drum with concrete and mine is still not as solid as I expected.

So far it looks like it’ll be ok. I have a contingency plan if it’s not. I’ve got some lead shot I’ve been hauling house to house since 2003. Where I found it is a very different story. I just couldn’t toss that toxic stuff in a landfill, and knew it would come in handy someday. If it’s not heavy enough, maybe I’ll grab a respirator and melt some into the wheel.

Done. Solid as all hell. Very simple project compared to people that really can fabricate, but I enjoyed it. 5/8” bolts, 5/8” holes in the plate, trimmed washers on top. And I like that there is finally a logical place to store the polymer jaw inserts. I’ll use this for decades hopefully.
