A lot is going to depend on intended use - and tire size. Get up to 40" tires, there's a heck of a lot of force acting in different ways.Because then it would be a lot less stiff. Instead of being less stiff for a couple of inches at the ends it would be less stiff along the entire length with the result of it being a lot more springy/bendy. But the whole bar is probably overkill anyway, like you said, and for bragging rights, as ShadowsPapa said.
Your explanation of the why that bar is how it is sound spot-on to me. Less chance of bow in extreme conditions and forces.
