Motobilt differential covers

Motobilt covers are very strong, quarter inch plate press-bent and welded inside and out, with a 3/8 inch thick mounting ring. Installed mine today. Perfect fit, and good clearance to track bars, steering tie rod, rear sway bar. Not only are they very reasonably priced, especially for the labor involved in building them, but they come with correct length grade 12.9 bolts that take a 12 point socket or box end wrench in 5/16" or 8 mm.

What do they actually help out with or prevent. Sorry I'm kind of a newbie.

They stiffen the housing but the main benefit for me is rock protection. Thirty years ago, while creeping along a dry wash, I ran over a small bush that had a huge rock hidden in it. My 3/16" skid plate on the Dana 60 was pushed back to the cover and the engine stalled.
