Noticed a strange noise when decelerating at city speeds. The only times I hear it is when I get back from work, from about a 30 km drive. And its not all the time.

It sounds like an engine brake. This guy on wranglerforum has the same noise, and he captured it on video.

Any idea? It really seems to come from the engine/exhaust

Cannnot really hear anything clearly.

But I also have the feeling that the car is doing an automatic motor brake when decelarating some time at lower speeds on downhill passages which sounds somehow strange to me.
I would say with a similar noise as in the video.

And sometimes it is not shifting to higher gears at low speeds (about 30 km/h) when I would expect it should.

But since the rest is working fine I didn't care too much ....

Look on this post made on 12/21/23:
“ New Gladiator Diesel Owner: Engine Start shake and "Drivetrain" noises”.

There is a recording on this post also. My Diesel makes the same “Darth Vader” noise and I was told by a tech at the dealership it is the turbo releasing back pressure that is dumped into the engines air intake.

Sounds like a diesel.
This. I get a clattering sound from the exhaust system on deceleration when warm. Almost daily I can hear it. Not worried one bit.
