This clunk thing when going into reverse when cold has been going on for quite a while now with no fix. Has there been any failures? Anyone found a fix? Do we just live with it? Is there anyone that does not have it?
Hi,
In your opinion is transfer or transmission? Foraging the forums it seems to be transfer case related.

I have it when I first shift be into drive or reverse at the beginning of the day, and after a long period of parking. I believe is on the transfer ( I taught mine was transmission before, but no), if it is the stock transfer, since inside is a giant chain, and in any chain it will expand over time, until it finally gives.

Is there anyone with an Atlas transfer installed, do you have this same noise?

Summarizing, have same noise, asked before and it seems there is no fix, and is transfer related, due to it uses a giant chain, only solution, I believe is switch to an Atlas since it is completely different, is like a manual gearbox from 80’s which is great..

It's in the transmission. If it was TC related it would do I all the time, not when just after sitting for a while. Only does it in reverse and only one time. No one knows of a fix.

Yes we know the cause and fix. Bad D clutch and warped backing plate of the D clutch. Replace the complete rear output shaft assembly kit. 4 special tools needed. Be sure to have a real transmission tech do the work.

Thanks for the info. Sounds about right. Probably about $5K. I know I did get it hot on the Nor Cal BDR about a year or so ago.
