To start with, I'm a firefighter living in an apartment complex with my soon-to-be gladiator parked outside. Below is the list of the considerations I'm making while trying to choose a cost-effective bedrack. I'm not looking for bottom dollar bed rack, and I really like the cab height Nuthouse industries rack, but each and every one of their accessories is like $1,000 or more......easily turning a standard built rack with a few accessories into a 10k purchase.....Any good alternatives? Does anybody have a Nuthouse bedrack?
Here are the considerations I need to make:
- I have no storage or way to easily add/remove the bedrack, so I want something with a lot of flexibility.
- I like the square tube bedracks because it's easier to mount emergency lights on. I don't need scene lights because my emergency lights can operate as scene lights as well
- I like that the Nuthouse bedrack works well with a tonneau cover so that I have a large bed storage area that's secured by key and will keep the elements out, while also able to open up if I need to haul any larger items like a mattress or some furniture.
- I was thinking of doing the nuthouse tray on the front of the rack, and hoping to be able to also place a rotopax mount on the passenger front side over the tray (accessing tray from only 1 side would be fine, as I'd be securing tubs or maybe some hand tools on the tray)
- The back area, I just wanted to do the large 36" storage boxes on both sides. I could fit fire and rescue gear in them.
- Considering eventually adding the maxtrax storage trays on the belly of the top of the rack
- I'd eventually want to place an awning on the driver's side to make a shaded work area
- I'm not a big fan of rooftop tents, so I don't think I'd be putting anything on top of the rack for now
- I'm not sure what I want to do about sleeping overnight when roadtripping/camping. I think I'll pack a standard tent, or use the awning sidewalls as a tent and sleep on a cot to start with. May use the bed and tonneau cover as a sleeping area under certain conditions
For those who've read through all of this....any suggestions on other racks that can provide security, protection from elements, and something where I won't have to keep taking things on/off to store overnight if I don't need them for a trip?
Thanks!
