The few times mom would work nights, Dad would mix all the leftovers together and call it stew. He would add water to salad dressing bottles to get the last bit out. Same with katchup.
My dad would do the same thing with bottles. Trying to get the last bit out of them. He would put a bottle on top of another bottle to drain. He grew up on a farm during the Depression. Didn't have squat. Nothing went to waste. Ate everything. Sheep brains, cow tongues, pig's feet, you name it. Growing up. I watched that man eat stuff that I had to walk away from. My daughter called him Pap Pap Packrat. LOL He hated to throw stuff out. Figured that he could use it later on.

You just described my dad (& mom) to a t. We came across some real “treasures” when we cleaned out the house after they passed.

My mom was totally different. She had it easy. Grandma worked on the barge boats on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers during the Depression as a cook. So they wasn't hurting that much for money. Mom would throw stuff away and dad would try to save it. Dad would try to save every nickel and mom would spend it. Match made in hell. It was a fun childhood at times.

My folks were similar, but this SECRET RECIPE is from a whole different phase of my life, hitchhiking around with a tent:

Has anyone ever heard of “Hobo Soup”?

The idea is to grab handfuls of Ketchup packs from a fast food place. Then add some water and heat. Best to assemble your kit from a few different places: The Salt, Pepper, Ketchup from almost anywhere. Saltines from Wendy’s, but they used ketchup pumps instead of packs. Taco Bell for Xtra Spicy sauce. A pizza place for garlic and basil. Then you’re all set.

That’s a basic go-to when you’re camping broke. Also goes by “Hobo Stew” if you have some stuff to add, like If you’re fishing or packing Ramen noodles. There are other ways to get free food while you’re actually still in a fast food joint, this is for the road.
