Why is it that I got that instantly?

Many years ago, Bo Jackson was on a talk show talking about his upbringing. He said that his mom was tough on him. Even in high school he was quite athletic. One day he had done something wrong and his mom called him in for it. She had an extension cord in one hand and a .38 in the other.
She held up the cord and said 'this one is for what you have done.'
Then she held up the .38 and said 'this one is in case you try to run.'
He took his licks with the cord.
