I was out in the sticks, 1 channel only on the black and white tv… party line phone with 5 digits.

And who remembers the HiFi radio and turntable that was a piece of furniture?

I thought the sound out of some of those consoles was worthy of the real estate they took up. Grandparents had an old RCA out of the 60s that I threw London Calling on and was blown away. Digital equivalent lost something. I'm no technophobe, but damn I loved that rich sound.

Pretty much anything on vinyl sounds better than everything on CD, Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Pandora, etc. Digital sucked the soul out of music.

Digital can be awesome when done right. Takes good bit depth and quit with the lossy compression schemes to save size ‘ bandwidth. The old analog gear wasn’t perfectly accurate but did impart a smoothness that I find pleasing to the ear.

SeriusXM sucks sooooooo bad because they squeeze the living hell out of the bandwidth just to add one more channel of crap programming. It actually makes my ears hurt. I would rather listen to music on AM radio than to hear the mashed sound on satellite. Apple did up their game a few years back offering better audio than before since the mobile networks and WiFi are faster and device storage capacities grew so much.

those old consoles also had a lot more speaker baffle room inside. Much of the common speaker systems today are more compact due to style. Size does matter. Good music requires proper presentation to be fully appreciated for the art it is. Let the sound wash over you and take you back, or away. Like when you eat good smoked bacon and you feel it in your toes. There must be a God!

Not that this thread is lacking in changes of direction, but while we’re on the topic of digital music, what was the first CD that you bought? This is for the over 50 crowd who actually grew up flipping albums over.
Mine was Tesla Mechanical Resonance, a very fine piece of music that still holds up today.

All: Allroy’s Revenge I think. I distinctly remember my busy plugging in his cd Walkman to his car stereo and jamming “Hot Rod Lincoln” cover by the band. Ran out and got a Sony discman and that Cd

Pretty sure it was Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation by Frank Zappa. Couldn't believe that a simple five inch diameter CD could fit over an hour and a half of music on it. And be a fucking great pair of albums to boot!

I didn’t technically buy my first CD. I traded some work with a local album rock station that was switching formats to some kind of office-friendly light pop. I got to pick 3 from the soon to be boxed up rock for my effort.

Bob Seger: Night Moves,
Bruce: Born in the USA
Bad Company: Bad Company.

I didn’t even own a CD player then but it was in my plans.
