Piece of cake welding. Yea, the fit up would be a pita. Last time I welded something like that was on a mud drum for boiler piping. Cut your way in. Weld your way out.

You didn’t actually have to pay ya know! Beating pay phones was part of a whole underground hobby called phreaking. It was big in the 70's. Basically hacking for phones.

Phones with dials- you just just tapped the hang-up hook thing to make it sound like a dialed number. Like 10 quick taps for an Operator. A little tricky until you got the hang of it. Advanced phreakers could make the phones spew out their money.

Phones with buttons - The system, not the phone, had become more complicated. For local calls you could usually still use the folded gum wrapper foil, or put the coin in with a pop can top (soda top) to retrieve it.

Tricking the system to call long distance in the time of push button phones was very hard. Nobody knew how until a 1971 magazine story about some guys who had figured it out. You needed an electronic “box" to basically play the right series of tones at the right frequencies. For the next five years every phreak in the country was trying to build the best box. They were kinda illegal, but you could buy one if you "knew a guy”.

The story is that a couple of guys in CA, total phreaks, read that magazine article. They went all-in on building boxes and figuring this phone system stuff out. They dropped out of college, made great boxes in the garage, and sold them fast as they could build them. The tech genius guy built them, the sales genius guy sold them. Their boxes got better and better and more complex. In a couple of years they built a similar, more powerful box...and started Apple in 1976.

The first full, closed-fist, knockout punch that I took to the face was as a 10-year old kid at a payphone.

I was going down these long rows of phones flipping coin returns (as one did) late at night in an empty part of JFK airport. (Just why my skinny 10-year old Appalachian ass was there at all is a different story). It was unbelievable! Like a dream, money was literally raining down on me. (It was change from expensive overseas long distance calls). I mean, I could almost hear the Angels singing. I had pulled the bottom of my T-shirt out in front of me with both hands like a bucket just to hold it all. Suddenly this scruffy old woman appeared out of nowhere and just clocked me, a full wind-up haymaker. I went deaf, dumb, blind, and flying. Coins rolled everywhere. She may have followed it up with some footwork, not sure. I vaguely remember crawling, then running. She was chasing me and screaming over and over that it was HER "route".

Used to practice welding razor blades together with a TIG at about 3 amps. Then weld using Jet rod at about 400 amp. Used to be an exotic metals welder at Elliott TurboMachinery. Welded everything from cast iron to waspaloy. Stick, tig, mig, sub-arc, flux-core, pulse arc tig (micro tig).
