I tried searching but couldn't find anything relevant.

Some car brands offer the option to pick your car up from the factory. BMW, Porsche, and I think Dodge with the Viper had this as an option

I figure I'm only a few hours from Toledo, why waste $1400 on the destination charge and have to wait weeks for it to sit in a lot waiting for shipping?

Has anybody heard about an option to just pick it up at the factory?

Destination charge is a leveled cost for the lower 48 states and is not negotiable or removable regardless how close to or if the factory did deliveries.

Chevy offers a "Museum Delivery" option for $990 for Corvettes just outside the factory in Bowling Green that includes a factory tour, but in addition to the extra $990 cost, the destination charge is still on the invoice and not removed.

If it was about saving themselves the hassle and cost they would allow it. As it is the highest destination charge in the industry by upwards of $500 I expect it is just a money grab.

Most larger suvs and trucks are at this level of price the F series is 1595, Silverado is 1495 and rams at 1695 so it is in line with other trucks

Interesting. I have bought a new vehicle just about every 3 years for the last 10'or so. Never seen a destination charge over $895.

Yes the larger (trucks and SUV's) have gone up drastically in the past couple of years...cars are still just under 1k

Weird! You can do a tour of the F150 plant for $15

Yeah it all seems like a weird racket to me. Just a weird unavoidable expense that I could put towards tires or something else

I believe I read at one point that the delivery cost is a negotiated rate with the union and therefore can't be messed with.

I recall the same thing in years past. It is not just the factory labor unions but also the Teamsters Union for the transport trucks and the Railroad unions for the rail yards that dip into and spread the destination costs around. That is mainly the Big Three Detroit domestic brands. The other non domestic makers who build here and not really unionized, their destination charges are usually lower on average.
